Trichotillomania or Hair Pulling, Eyelash and Eyebrow Pulling

Welcome to my lens on trichotillomania. This condition involves the pulling or plucking of hair from almost any part of the body.

Usually this behaviour or urge called trichotillomania results in an unconscious pulling of hair from the head, eye lashes or eye brows but can also include hair-pulling from anywhere.

Help for hair pulling, eyelash or eyebrow pulling in the form of therapy can look at early experiences, stress and family influences as possible causes of trichotillomania.

What is Trichotillomania?

What is hair-pulling all about?

There is an apparent difference of opinion in the medical world as to whether trichotillomania is an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) or an impulse disorder. However, whatever it is classified as, about 2% of the population know it causes them a great deal of embarrassment, discomfort and distress.

The condition, sometimes called "tricho" or TTm or short, is as individual as the people who suffer from it. For many, the symptoms will be evident as hair pulling. Literally pulling their hair out from any
area of their body and even from their close relatives and partners. Others will focus on pulling hair from maybe just one area of the body such
eyebrow pulling, eyelash pulling and so on.

What is Trichotillomania? (Part 2)

What do people do with hair that has been pulled?

When someone has a form of trichotillomania, what happens after hair has been pulled from the body can also vary from sufferer to sufferer.

Some then keep the hair, whilst others use the pulled hair as dental floss and a small percentage eat the hair, which is referred to as trichophagia.

Trichophagia can cause serious stomach pain and on occasions surgery is needed to remove hairball.

How to stop pulling your hair now

Help yourself trichotillamania pack

For some people it's just not convenient to start a programme of therapy. This could be because you have a busy work schedule or challenging home balancing act. Maybe you travel for work and are not able to commit to a regular appointment or maybe you're just not ready. However what you do feel is that you could do one thing to help yourself get started on the road to making the changes on your wish list. The most important being to stopping pulling your hair.

There is an opportunity that can be consistent with the positive intentions you have to quit pulling and to start to take control of your unwanted compulsive behaviour. Kensington Hypnosis in conjunction with Pilgrim Recordings has produced an effective therapy resource focusing on helping you to help yourself with the challenges of trichotillomania and all its variations and associated conditions.

This quit pulling therapy resource consists of two cds. Disk one is a talking cd, which utilises the power of hypnotherapy. You can listen to this cd in bed. It helps you to sleep along and appeals directly to your unconscious mind which keeps working even while you are a sleep.

The second disk is what is a whisper subliminal recording. You can play this during activities that you have identified as trigger times for feeling stressed or pulling times eg. reading, watching TV, thinking about what to write at the computer, sitting at traffic lights etc .You know of course know what your patterns and triggers are.

Also included with the cds is a hair pulling questionnaire. Its aim is firstly to help you become more aware of your pulling patterns and secondly to help you play detective with your family and other external influences. It's very unusual for you to be the only person in your family with trichotillomania but you may have to spend some time looking at old photos. It is possible that an uncle went bald very early?

So maybe it's time to stop beating yourself up about the situation and begin to make the changes that will help you get back in charge of and on track with your life. Many others have stopped pulling their hair and enjoy confident living and so can you.

Glad I read your lens. I pull my hair a lot. I would have started on my eyelashes if I hadn't read your lens - didn't know there was a name for it.
