Of course they're not really hairless, because they have hair on their head, just like I do. But they are smooth skinned, unlike most dogs. Here are links and information devoted to the hairless dog breeds- Chinese Crested, Xoloitzcuintli, Peruvian Inca Orchid, and the American Hairless Terrier.

Be sure to admire Einstein, our crazy and devoted Chinese Crested rescue dog.

How'd did he get to be like...umm... that?

or, a real, live Dr. Suess dog

Hairless dogs came to be as a result of a genetic mutation. The mutation also affects dentition, and most hairless breeds (the AHT being the exception) also have poor teeth.

Plenty of people like their smooth skin and began to breed for it. Haired and hairless types are born together in the same litter. Breeding these hairless wonders are an art and science!

In Mexico, the Aztecs raised herds of Xolos for eating, as one would cattle. This is evidently still well known, as a Mexican acquainance informed us. He laughed when he saw Einstein, and made a comment which my father translated as "We eat dogs like that in Mexico."

His unusual looks get a lot of attention. I joked when we got Einstein "If there is a section of the population that was still able to ignore our family, they can't anymore." Going for a walk is like being a sideshow in the circus.

Einsten is great with the children (though nervous about visiting children), easy to keep clean (and we never have to worry about fleas), funny and adventurous. He drives us crazy, and we love him. Who could ask for anything more?
