Understanding, Simplifying and Solving Hair Loss Problems

Our goal is to unlock the mystery and navigate readers through the maze of perhaps the most sensitive and misunderstood conditions that nearly 80 million men and women, in the U.S. alone, suffer with at some point in their lives, hair loss.

Why do Men and Women Lose Hair and What Can You Do?

Hair Loss Truth

There are a multitude of reasons men and women may at some point in their lives experience temporary or permanent hair loss. By far, however, the most common hair loss cause is a condition called "androgenetic alopecia."

Androgenetic alopecia can occur in men or women as early as age 18. Androgentic alopecia is related to hormones called androgens that reside in our bodies. The androgen called dihydrotestosterone or DHT are found in both men and women. What happens is an enzyme called 5 alpha reductase somehow converts testosterone into dihydrotestoserone, which then attacks the receptor on the bulb of the hair causing it to shrink in size and eventually fall out and never grow back.

Hair Loss Myths

Over the centuries there have been dozens of myths associated with causing hair loss. Some include, excessive shampooing, wearing caps, excessive blow drying, etc. The good news is, in recent years, physicians have concluded that none of these cause female hair loss or male hair loss. However, any of these can potentially cause changes in the physical appearance of your hair shafts. For example, blow drying your hair using a hot setting can cause your hair to become brittle or excessively dry but certainly depends on the individual.

Hair Loss Solutions

There are numerous hair loss treatments available for men and women. Shampoos, medications, surgery, vitamins and hair pieces. The truth is, each individual is different and what may be an appropriate solution for one person may not work for someone else. For example, if a 50 year old man has Hamilton Class 5 male pattern baldness, then he will not benefit from just using a cleansing shampoo. In order for him to achieve a result, he would likely need to consider hair transplant surgery or perhaps a hair piece. However, if someone with fine hair and an oily scalp, who appears to have thinning hair, a deep cleansing shampoo may perhaps be all they need.
