How Do I Cure My Hair Loss?

Hair loss is disturbing for anyone, but for women it can be downright terrifying. Men are able to shave their heads and go about their business so their lack of hair actually looks deliberate, but unless you're willing to go out looking like Sinead O'Connor, then you really don't have much in the way of options.

You're going to need a good solution and you need it yesterday. Sometimes, hair loss is caused by Female Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA) and your hair will thin out resulting in decreased density overall.

This is because you have elevated levels of androgen (testosterone) in your body. In this case, your doctor may prescribe you some antiandrogens to help decrease the amount of androgens there are and thereby helping you to regain your hair.

Some popular antiandrogens are spironolactone (which is the most popular) and flutamide. Female Telogen Effluvium is where a large number of hair follicles decide they're going to go dormant.

This particular cause of hair loss is easy to fix because the method has been proven. Simply get some minoxidil and rub it into your scalp and you should see an increase in density within 4 months.

Female Alopecia Areata is where the body sees that their follicles are something that needs to be purged - they are seen as foreign. It can be caused by thyroid problems or other autoimmune problems and is more common in children than adults. There doesn't seem to be a reliable therapy to this condition and about half of all people who experience this will become completely bald.

Hair Loss Treatments That Work

There are many different treatments for hair loss, and they vary from prescription medications and over the counter medications, or even some remedies that don't really have a basis in medicine.

One thing people must remember is that males and females both have levels of testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone in their body - essentially the three sex hormones. Spironolactone is an anti-androgen which reduces the amount of testosterone that is used by the body.

It neutralizes the testosterone receptors in the body making them virtually useless. Increased levels of testosterone in any person can produce extra, unwanted hair, but it also paves the way for the production of DHT.

Flutamide is also a popular anti-androgen and can be used as some people work better with one or the other. Finasteride prevents the testosterone already in the body from being converted into dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

In both males and females, there is a conversion of testosterone into DHT from testosterone that is already present (free testosterone) which is a potent hormone that is responsible for the thinning of hair on the head and increased hair on the face.

Elsewhere, it is directly responsible for hirsutism. Finally, there's minoxidil that's available over the counter in just about every store now. It comes into two strengths, 2% and 5%, and while women have been warned to not touch and handle the minoxidil, there is now a solution for women that is essentially the same, but they're in pink packages instead of the traditional ones. Other than the packaging, they are virtually the same.

Alternative Hair Loss Solutions

If you're not into pumping your body full of man-made drugs, then you probably want to explore your natural alternatives, or even more of an external approach that isn't just rubbing chemicals on your head.

Green tea behaves just like finasteride in that it prevents testosterone from being converted into DHT, the more potent form of the hormone. So, green tea would work in most cases in order to reduce the amount of DHT present in a person's body, but just like finasteride, it doesn't mean that it will make your hair grow again, but you can be assured that it will help prevent more hair from being affected by DHT.

Hair-loss shampoos are also another alternative, and can be used as an easier method for making your hair grow again. These shampoos will typically have some minoxidil in them but the biggest difference here is, of course, the price and the fact you're not just rubbing some solution on your head.

This can be easily done while taking a bath or a shower and doesn't interrupt your regular cleaning ritual. You can purchase a fine bottle of Jan Marini's Age Intervention Hair Revitalizer Conditioner to help you with your hair.

Using essential oils can help regain hair loss as a result of alopecia areata. By combining the oils of lavender, cedarwood, rosemary, and thyme, people are able to see an increase of hair growth after about seven months of continued aromatherapy.
