My First Hairpin Lace Afghan

Hairpin Lace Is Beautiful

One of the most beautiful afghans I have made is this one with a stitch called hairpin lace. It requires a special frame. The stitch is a simple single crochet and you wrap loops around the frame.

I crocheted this afghan for my parents when I was pregnant with my daughter. She had her 36th birthday earlier this month. My dad passed away in 2008. My mom said it was his favorite blanket and did I want it back. I can see him sitting in his recliner with the afghan wrapped around him. I'm happy it brought him comfort for so many years.

Let me show you how to make a hairpin lace afghan.

Yes it fun fast and pretty

Your picture above near the beginning appears to be broomstick lace, not hairpi lace?

maggie says:

Years ago, I made 13 in a row for Christmas gifts for my family. I remember that someone had made a smaller version afghan, in pastels, for a baby gift; but I don't remember the dimensions. (How many skeins, how many loops, how many strips, eg.)

Gee Beth...and you're a nurse, and an operating room one...I think nurses are the closest thing we have to angels here on the planet...no wonder your dad loved your afghan, he wasn't just a looker!
But I was surprised to hear, first, that your mum would part with it, if he loved it, and also, that he did love it. Couldn't get my dad to wear those "prissy" things so eventually socks [and I had to be careful of so much, pattern, colour, yarn] were all I could make him.
I have crocheted for years, was taught by a wonderful teacher [she must have been a nurse in her spare time] when very young and went on blindly without guidance the next year when I moved up a grade from then on...so I had never hear of hairpin lace. But I have a loom now and am teaching myself to do it with all sorts of media, including copper and sterling wire for jewellery, to add to my very small but still young attempt to make part of my living from hand crocheted swimwear, lingerie and wire wrapped jewellery. Without seeing ahead at the time I made the decision, it all seems to sort of fit together, almost mathematically...beautifully. You did ask people to let you know they had called by, I found your stuff quite interesting, thanks. Jo in Australia.

My Mom did crocheting, including hairpin lace. I treasure the afghan she made for me years ago. I would say you had an excellent first run on your first hairpin lace project.

Is Afghan a shawl ? It looks lovely and the patience of stitching it is remarkable.

Well I am not sure what an Afghan is. Is it a type of shawl? We probably don't have too many of them in Australia. Great lens and enjoyable subject.

What a love about this afghan is not only the love and skill that went into it but also the memories it holds. I'm sure it will continue to be treasured for a long, long time. At the moment, the pear is the beginning and end of my crochet experience... but you are tempting me to stick at it!

Beautiful! I am struggling with a ripple afghan right now. I am seriously a Level I Kindergarten crocheter!

Such a beautiful gift of love! I am so glad you Dad actually used the afghan. So often we put these treasures away to preserve them and they don't ever get used. I am glad you have such lovely memories associated with your gift.

Absolutely beautiful. I'm always looking for new craft ideas. I can't stand to have my hands still. I need to be working on something all the time.

Oh this is beautiful and I really appreciate all the effort it took to make such a gorgeous piece. I love to wrap up in an Afghan but don't think we have a Hairpin Lace Afghan. I always feel like I am wrapped in love.
