We'd love to tell you more about hair sticks and hair forks and how they can be used, please read on! :)

Hair Sticks and Forks can be Used in Many Styles

What are Hairsticks (also known as Hair Sticks)?

Have you ever seen a woman with long hair apparently effortlessly up in an intricate style with a pencil, chopstick or more elegant stick? I always envied these women their ability to quickly create these styles, until I discovered hair sticks myself. Hair sticks are decorative pieces of art, which really do make these styles extremely easy for anyone with shoulder-length or longer hair to create, with a little practice.

A major advantage of hair sticks is how little they damage long hair. When growing long hair, it is very important to minimize damage and breakage, and hair sticks are some of the least damaging hair accessories. Contrary to popular belief, long hair does not have to take a long time to style every morning. Compared to the blowdrying and styling products often needed to style short hair, putting up long hair with hair sticks takes no time at all! Also, you do not have to have superlong hair to use hair sticks. As long as your hair is shoulder-length or longer, you will be able to use hair sticks. Any hair stick purchase from Art for Hair includes fully illustrated instructions for several styles, so you will easily be able to create a variety of styles.

Hair Stick History

Hair sticks have been used since ancient times, and there are records of them being used by the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. Of course, it is the Chinese and Japanese cultures which are best known for their use of hair sticks. In Japan, Geishas used elaborate hair sticks as part of their decorative styles. As a Geisha progressed in seniority, they wore different hair sticks to signify their rank. Different sticks, colors and flowers were also worn with different seasons and festivals. These hair sticks were called Kanzashi.

During the 1920s, hair sticks became more widely used in the West. Today, they remain a classic way to style long hair; they will never be out of fashion. Hair sticks today are made from wood, bone or metal, and choice of material is largely a personal preference. The tops may simply be carved into a design, or decorated with beads or dangles. There is a hair stick for every occasion, from designs suitable for casual, everyday wear to those for office wear, special occasions and formal events.

What are Hair Forks?

Hair forks are really just like parallel hair sticks. They are most commonly made from wood or metal and have two or three prongs, although some can have 5 o6 prongs. They are used in the same way as hair sticks to hold different long hair styles. Like hair sticks, hair forks are very non-damaging to hair, and can be used with hair from shoulder-length or longer. Hair forks are made in a variety of styles, and the prongs (also known as tines) may be straight or curved. Hair fork design is usually a matter of personal preference, although those with fine hair will probably find that forks with closely spaced prongs will provide better hold, and conversely, those with very thick or curly hair may find that wider prongs work better for them.

What Length Hair Stick/Fork do I Need?

The length of hair stick / fork you require will depend on the length and thickness of your hair, and also the type of hair-do you want to do with it. Most hairsticks offered for sale give a functional length and a total length. The functional length is the length that you can use in your bun/do, so excludes any decorated topper and is just the smooth length of the 'stick' part.

To determine what functional length of hair stick/fork you need, make a simple cinnamon bun (see instructions below) with a pencil. Have someone measure across the bun, the length of the pencil that is hidden by your hair. Now consider how much of the hair stick/fork prongs you'd like to 'stick out' on each side of the bun. Most people prefer not too much to be sticking out, maybe 1-2 inches total. Add the measurement you took across the bun to this number, and you have the functional length you need to look for in a new hair stick/fork.

If you would like to do a style such as the flip (see instructions below), you will need a slightly longer hair stick/fork.

Hair Stick or Hair Fork Styles 1 - Simple Cinnamon Bun

An easy one hair stick or fork style suitable for any occasion!

This is one of the simplest hair stick or fork styles. It can generally be held with just one hair stick, although another may be added for additional security or to decorate. First, the hair is drawn back into a ponytail (but not secured with a band, just held). The tail is then twisted into a rope, and this is coiled around the base of the ponytail. A hair stick is taken and inserted into the outer coil at about the one o'clock position. It is then weaved in and out of the bun and scalp hair to emerge at about the seven o'clock position. Another hair stick can be added, either parallel or to form an 'x'. A hair fork can also be used in the same way to hold this bun. Would you like to see this instructions illustrated? Hair Stick Styles 2 - The Flip

A casual, quick one hair stick style

This fun way to put long hair up uses one hair stick only. First, hold your hair back in a ponytail, and hold a hair stick vertically on the left hand side of it. Bring the ponytail in front of the hair stick, so the tail is held horizontally, pointing towards your left. Rotate the hair stick 180 degrees clockwise, bringing the ponytail behind it (between your head and the stick). The stick should now be vertical again, but pointing upwards. Now rotate the stick so that it is horizontal, but pointing striaght into your head. Continue rotating in this plane until it is vertical again pointing down. Push the hair stick down through your hair until the hold is comfortable. Would you like to see this instructions illustrated? Check out the illustrated, step-by-step instructions on our website. "The hairstick arrived safely today! Thank you so much for making it for me. I love it! This is so gorgeous!

I'm glad that you added the dangle for me because I really like how it hangs and moves. The hairstick looks so beautiful when used in hair - just the right portion of wooden part and the flower part are showing, and the dangle is just so pretty.

Thank you very much again for such wonderful work of art."
