Determining Which Hairstyle is Right for You

Choosing the right hairstyle for you isn't just about finding a photo you like in a magazine and asking your stylist to duplicate it. You need to be sure any hairstyle you intend to request is going to flatter your face shape and look good with your hair type.

There are two main factors in determining the right style for you - the shape of your face and whether your hair is coarse or fine. For example, fine hair needs shaped cuts like bobs or styles with bangs, or styles with layering for extra volume. Coarse hair often needs layered styles also, especially if it is especially thick.

The oval face shape is the most diverse. If you have an oval shape, you can experiment with almost any haircut imaginable! You can wear your hair any length, it can be layered or not, it can have bangs or not. You can also wear your hair up or down equally well.

Haircuts for round faces usually need a lot of volume at the crown in order to offset the roundness of their face. Hair can be almost any style, but should be either shorter or longer than chin length. Your hair should never be parted in the center if you have a round face, because this will just accentuate the roundness.

Square faces need hairstyles that will soften the harshness of their faces. Layers are very good for this, as are curls, waves, and side-swept bangs. Long, straight hair is generally not good for square faces.

Heart shaped faces look best with chin length or longer hair. You won't want a lot of height or volume at the crown, because it will make your chin appear especially small.

Long faces need a lot of volume on the sides to widen the look for their faces. Long hair is generally very bad for long faces. Volume at the crown will lengthen the face, and should also be avoided. Bangs are important for long faces.

Short Hair Styles and Long Hair Styles That Flatter the Face

Each season sees its own series of both short and long styles. Some years short cuts may predominate, and other years you'll see more long styles, but overall they're pretty evenly matched.

Choosing a hairstyle you like will probably be hard enough. I know I always have trouble choosing between several different styles. But you have to remember to choose a cut that flatters your face. Each face shape has its own styles that are important.

If you have a shorter face, you'll probably want to choose a cut that is either shorter or longer than chin-length. Chin length styles tend to make faces look shorter, so they're better for people with longer, thinner faces.

Round faces should choose cuts with volume at the crown. Square faces need wispy layers, waves, or side-swept bangs to soften their features. Shags and asymmetric hair styles can work for some shorter faces. Shag hair styles with volume at the crown are especially good for round faces.

If you have a particularly long face, you'll probably want to avoid long styles completely. It's unfortunate if you really love long cuts, but it's important to choose a cut that will flatter your face.

If you don't, you're probably going be unhappy with the cut, even if you like the style itself. Some types of bob hair styles can look great on longer faces. Mod hair styles can also be quite flattering to longer faces.

Heart-shaped faces should choose longer cuts without a lot of height at the crown. If you have a lot of height or body at the crown, it will make your chin look smaller. It's best to choose styles that fall below the chin with most of the body near the ends.

Celebrity Hairstyles and Special Occasions

Finding the right hairstyle for you is only part of it. There's your everyday style, then there's the style where you want to look your absolute best because everyone's eyes are going to be on you, so you want to make sure you look like the star of the show.

One of the best things you can do is look at celebrity hair styles. Buy a magazine or watch an award show where the celebrities are going to look their best to be in front of a live camera. Even if the events aren't live, they're going to be talked about for many weeks to follow because everyone seems to follow the celebrities to see what clothes they're wearing or what hairstyles they're showing off.

Of course, common sense should be used while looking at celebrities. There aren't a lot of women who would brave the Sinead O'Connor bald headed look. You've probably already figured out which hairstyle is right for you and depending on the length of your hair, narrowed them down quite a bit.

You shouldn't have to spend three to four hours per day styling your hair just to go to the store for groceries. The people who work there wouldn't really notice nor would they appreciate the work you spent on your hair.

The everyday style should be kept simple yet flattering and you would want to save the most elegant styles for your wedding, prom, or other special occasions such as graduation. You also want to make sure you get a style that looks like you spent forever on it when it only takes a few minutes.

If you'd like a great celebrity haircut, you can pick up one of the celebrity hairstyle magazines that are available, or pick up any magazine that focuses on celebrities. You'll get plenty of great ideas to show your stylist.
