Just so you know, its better if people use sulfate-free shampoos or just conditioners that can cleanse the hair.Sulfates are known to dry out the hair & to degrade the thickness of the hair over time.As an african-american,I only use sulfate-free shampoos & cleansing conditioners to clean my hair, since its so dry.

When I started taking 5-mthf (a methylated folate) I started growing new hair. I've always had high peaks, but I started growing hair there! It was amazing.

I enjoyed your gardening section and your vitamin tips. Your hair is beautiful. I am 53 and have long hair (color is dark brown and white) down to my buns. My hair grows extremely fast. I can cut it to shoulder length and in 2 years it is to my buns again and I don't take all those vitamins.

But what I would like to know if anyone has found a natural way to color your hair? Or something you can take to keep your hair from changing to white or grey?

Hello, everyone!! I would just like to say that the vitamins the author has posted are great, and I have tried them all. However, if any of you are suffering from hair loss (or were, like me) you might want to try vitamins in whole food form. After searching long and hard I found Alive! Whole Food Energizer Vitamins and I LOVE them! They do not cause consipation or weight gain like many other vitamins do to me... they give me energy and most of all my hair is growing back as thick as ever!! My skin looks beautiful and healthy and they're reasonably priced! :) I wish everyone the best of luck with growing long, lustrous hair! :)

Thank you for all of the valuable information! I had 5 kids in 8 years, developed Hypothyroidism, and was diagnosed with Celiac disease . . . . my hair is thin and fairly brittle now I don't have any baldness or anything my hair just grows slowly. It is improving some since I became gluten free and have not had a baby in 2 1/2 years :) I will have to check my current vitamins and see what I am still lacking based on your lens! Thank you
  • elyria Jun 26, 2011 @ 12:27 pm | delete
I love long hair and found your Lens very informative, learned so much! My grandma always used to brush my hair hundred times each day but as I got older, I stopped doing that even though I always read in magazines how you have to brush your hair a lot (but I tend to agree with you that excessive brushing leads to hair breakage, I experimented and found out a hard way!) Great Lens and I love your curls!

Hello!! I absolutely LOVED your post! I was just wondering if you could help me with something -- I don't like using ANY conditioner on my hair, but just last week i took some whole milk (after shampooing) and poured a cup over my head and OH MY GOD it made my hair SO thick and healthy-feeling! It was awesome! Of course, after that i rinsed with water.. but i just wanted to know if this would be okay for the hair? Will the calcium in the milk clog my hair or coat the scalp? :S ....... i knoww its such a terrible waste, using milk on my hair, when there are people starving :( but i really need help with my hair. I would lovee a response. Thank you!!!! ^_^
  • flowergardener Apr 4, 2011 @ 11:06 am | delete
    Hi Mae!
Milk's vitamins A & D and the proteins Casein and Whey will be absorbed by your hair follicles. Many use milk like a conditioner for their hair, especially if it's dry, to produce shiny and softer hair.

It's been reported by Livestrong.com that a paste made with liquid Whey, egg yolk, and honey can stimulate your hair; and the Society of Investigative Dermatology states that ingesting Casein stimulates hair growth.

Actually, milk is a cheaper and better conditioner than many name brand conditioners! It won't 'clog' your hair or scalp, it benefits it :)

Why haven't I seen this page before? Oh dear, Deb!

I've been growing my hair since April of 2010. In that time I achieved growth from just above APL (armpit lenght) to just above BCL (butt crack length -- yeah, yeah). That was 16 months growth. Last month I chopped back to just below BSL (bra strap length) because my ends were too thin and I wanted a straight hem. My ultimate goal is knee length, but I'd be happy for a U-shaped hemline at classic.

I baby my hair, and am in fact working on a lens about what I do for it. I don't take a lot of vitamins though I do keep myself supplied with biotin. I'm not sure that I see that much of a difference regardless of the B-Vitamins that I take though, and inevitably they make me tired (the opposite of what you'd expect. I need to ask a doctor about this!).

How do you feel about miconazole nitrate for hair growth? I haven't tried it because I've heard so much about the headaches that it can cause (and it's expensive!) but I have a couple of friends who are growing who have had some hair loss. Monostat can actually thicken the hair (when applied to the head).

I might have to try out some of these supplements though. The terminal length on my hair seems to be much shorter than what my goal is, but then I have *very* thick hair (iii) and it's so heavy that I can understand why my terminal would be shorter than somebody with thinner hair.

With regard to what one can do to their hair to make it healthy and grow, it's less what you do to it and more what you *don't* do to it.

I used Vitamin E on my hair when still in college, didn't see my hair grow longer, why?
  • flowergardener Mar 12, 2011 @ 5:56 pm | delete
    Hi scar4,
Your answer is because Vitamin E 'on' your hair will only help it's outward appearance. To help your hair get healthy and grow you need to nourish your body from the 'inside' with the specific vitamins that help your hair.

Your hair is gorgeous! I'm so glad to learn all these tips - I'm going to compare my multi-vitamin to the list of vitamins you've given to see what I'm missing and what I'm actually getting! The same thing that happens to you is also what I experience - I'll go a year or more without a professional haircut (just trimming my bangs) and I'll go in and cringe and say, "Take off whatever is unhealthy. I know it might be a lot - just get off all the split ends, etc." and the lady always surprises and shocks me by saying, "You actually don't need much cut - your hair is surprisingly healthy." Every single time I'm so shocked. My hair is really thin, though. It's always been very fine and is thinning with age and with my bipolar meds. Ugh.

Nourishing your body from the inside is a great way to get healthy hair. In addition, to hair vitamins you can also nourish your hair and scalp from the outside with organic hair oils. Great lens! I learned a lot!

I found this thru a random google search on hair and this is just wonderful. I'm a 23 male, vegetarian, and letting my hair grow out long and this really helps since I was curious what vitamins I'm lacking from not eating meat but it looks like the insane healthy diet and cooking everything from scratch that i do is covering alot of this already, and the recommendations on the vitamin pills I'll be looking into as well. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. ^.^

I was just writing on my Lord Sesshomaru Costume lens about his ankle length hair, and how to work that into an authentic costume. Well, my mom (Tiddledeewinks who posted here), just sent me the link to your lens, knowing how much I love long hair, and the timing was perfect! I'm adding your lens as a featured lens on my Lord Sesshomaru lens. Here's the URL if you want to see where I put the link: http://www.squidoo.com/LordSesshomaruCostume

5 *'s. Very informative! I can never get my hair to grow longer. It's almost shoulder length, but even with vitamins I can't get it longer. I have to disagree on one thing though- long hair is NOT just for youbger girls. Look at June Carter-Cash. Johnny's wife. She had long hair into her 70's!

Very informative lens, I really enjoy it cos I am a believer of taking supplements. To me we never get enough from the fruits and vegetables due to the pesticides and artificial fertilizers. Maintaining healthy hair is not easy.

Good information. The news about the FDA regulating these type of products was particularly interesting!
