Do you have a favourite version of the Hallelujah lyrics?

Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah

From the lens How To Play Leonard Cohen Hallelujah Lyrics and Sheet Music.

For me, much as I love Rufus Wainwright's Hallelujah and Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah gives me chills, Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah is his song. The ultimate dark, poetic lyrics of a genius. Thank you Leonard Cohen for recording that first album and introducing a generation to a wonderful sound that went beyond the 1960s folk underground to take the world by storm!

Thanks so much! My ex-husband father always told us that he was Leonard Cohen's roommate at Harvard - apparently Cohen didn't go to Harvard, so there must be more to the story! Anyway, because he was Canadian and such a wonderful performer and songwriter we listened to a lot of Cohen when I was first married. Gagun (dad in law) is in heaven now, so I'll never be able to get all the details. Angel blessed - for bringing me K.d Lang's version as well as the transposition for other voices you found.

Wow, thank you for this lens! Hallelujah is one of my all-time favourite songs. Rufus Wainwright's version was the first I heard, and is still my favorite, although I also love the haunting sound of Jeff Buckley's version - he sings it as though he really means every word.

I might nominate Jeff Buckley but I have two versions (one live, one studio) and both are so quiet compared to the other tracks that I have to crank up the stereo and then get blasted when the next track comes on :) Rufus Wainwright grwols it really well but I'll agree that nobody matches the original.

    Great lens

I remember first hearing this in Shrek, the Rufus Wainwright version. I've hear K.D. Lang's moving version at the Vancouver Olympics. I think my all time favorite is Justin Timberlake's version at the Hope for Haiti concert. It was the most moving song for me for the entire show.

Love Leonard Cohen and I love all the versions of his song Hallelujah. Of course Leonard Cohen is the original and his version is special, but it's such a great song it works in all the versions! Love Jeff Buckley's version which has been performed by many, and I heard an a cappella version which is really cool too.
  • Photahsiamirabel May 3, 2010 @ 3:41 am | delete
Leonard Cohen is just something special - even still to be performing at his age! We couldn't take our eyes off the show when he sung Hallelujah. Thanks both for visiting :)
