February 18, 2003. (Physics) The concept of the existence of other physical dimensions, beyond those currently known, was rejected as nonsense even by one of its promoters, nearly 90 years ago. Now, however, could be the solution to explain some problems of particle physics, cosmology and gravitational physics.

String theory, developed over the past two decades, requires that space-time containing up to seven extra dimensions if you want to include gravity. Experts suspect there is something missing in this model. There seems to be more particles and forces we need, and operate in more complicated ways than they should.

The existence of other dimensions may help to explain these complexities. New experiments at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory are producing results that do not fit the standard model. Facts about particle physics, gravitational physics and cosmology is reminiscent of when quantum mechanics began to adopt a consistent manner, in the 20s of last century. For Sean Carroll, also from the University of Chicago, the existence of other dimensions could help solve two cosmological mysteries: what were the initial conditions of the universe, and what is the mysterious dark energy that is accelerating its expansion.

The physicists also propose that dark energy would be governed in part by what happens in the four known dimensions, and in part by what happens in the other dimensions.
