History of mellowcreme candy corn
The process for making candy corn was developed in the 1880s by George Renninger of the Wunderlee Candy Co. It involves combining honey, corn syrup, food colouring, and sugar to produce a syrup called mellowcreme. After colouring, the resulting syrup is formed into small corn kernel-shaped candies. These candies are said to taste like marshmallow, hence the "mellowcreme" label. The distinctive tri-colour kernels are a popular Halloween treat for trick or treat bags.
Over the last few years, the availability of candy corn has widened. It is now also available for Valentine's Day (pink and red), Easter (pastel colours), and Christmas (red and green).
