Classic Halloween Cartoons

They just don't make good Halloween Cartoons anymore

Why feature Classic Halloween Cartoons?

I love the old black and white cartoons.  They just set that proper mood with the shadowy darkness inherent to black and white animation.

The Disney and Bugs Bunny Halloween themed cartoons are the ones that stand out the most in my memory.  Sure there have been others since, but the Classics are the ones I remember most.

The Criteria for a Classic Halloween Cartoon

In my opinion, a Classic Halloween Cartoon needs to have some or all of the following elements to truly be considered a classic worthy of mention.

  • No computer animation. Perhaps 15-20 years from now some computer animated cartoon with a Halloween theme will be considered a classic. Right now they are just too flashy and techie to have that warm look that classic animation has.

  • The cartoon doesn't have to be black and white, but it is certainly a plus.

  • Anything from 20 years ago or older is up for grabs, with the exception of The Raven in the Simpsons Treehouse of Horror I. That is circa 1990.

  • An intriguing story or premise.

  • Quality animation. See the Disney short - The Skeleton Dance. Amazing stuff.

  • A great/interesting soundtrack gets you some bonus points.

  • The one criteria that has a moving scale for every viewer - nostalgia. Some are classics just because we remember watching them as kids and the fond memories associated with them. See "It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown."

If you don't see one of your favorite Classic Halloween Cartoons here, feel free to add it to the list.

Legend of Sleepy Hollow - Disney

I love the songs in this one with Bing Crosby doing the vocals.2 points

It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown

Is the animation great? Not really. Is the story compelling? No. Why is this on the list?

Because if brings back fond memories of my childhood and of the fun I had trick or treating around the neighborhood without fear of abduction or poisoning.1 point

Donald Duck - Trick or Treat

A beautifully animated Disney short. Donald's nephews come trick or treating and he pranks them. The nephews meet up with a witch who helps them get their treats from Uncle Donald.1 point

Garfield's Halloween Adventure

This 1985 Garfield cartoon had pretty good animation and a neat story featuring pirate ghosts chasing Garfield and Odie.1 point

The Simpson's Treehouse of Horror I

This is a Classic Halloween Cartoon just for the superbly done "The Raven" featuring the voice talents of James Earl Jones as the narrator.

Definite favorite of mine even though it aired well after my childhood.1 point

Mickey Mouse - Haunted House

There used to be an hour long weekday Disney program on one of the local channels when I was a kid. I think that is where I saw this one when there was a Halloween theme to the program.

I just love how much went in to the old black and white Disney cartoons. I think there is more artistic work in this than one of the too numerous "cartoons" produced today.

Oops, there I go sounding like an old curmudgeon. :)

    can't remember the name
Two children get kidnapped and taken to a castle where an OGOR 'The Finkmiester' eats children. The kids are saved by a flying snake with a strong French accent. There were some giant pumpkins in the story also.

Donald Duck - Trick or Treat

Another classic Disney halloween themed cartoon

Classic 1952 (not 1954 as it shows in the YouTube title) Disney Halloween short starring Donald Duck and his three nephews - Huey, Dewey, and Lewie. Love the song, too. So catchy.

Yes, and the evidence is . . .

cW says:

no cause classic is usually related to older or old, and how can they make a new old cartoon, evidence is logic... a new good probblt the best halloween movie ever made is called trick r treat

thumper1984 says:

i watch lots and i beleive Monster house and coraline r good halloween cartoons, oh by the way best halloween movie ever is trick r treat

No, the last "classic" was the Garfield Halloween Special circa 1985

JC says:

No they sure don't. I think we should lobby for all of these shows to be on tv again--if only one night for us adults that appreciate them.

KarenKay says:

I don't know about now but they sure were great then! Love this lens! Featured!

BackPorchView says:

Not really. I watched the computer animated Monster House and while the premise was intriguing the results were less than spectacular.
