They just don't make good Halloween Cartoons anymore
Why feature Classic Halloween Cartoons?
I love the old black and white cartoons. They just set that proper mood with the shadowy darkness inherent to black and white animation.
The Disney and Bugs Bunny Halloween themed cartoons are the ones that stand out the most in my memory. Sure there have been others since, but the Classics are the ones I remember most.
Skeleton Dance - Disney 1929
The Criteria for a Classic Halloween Cartoon
In my opinion, a Classic Halloween Cartoon needs to have some or all of the following elements to truly be considered a classic worthy of mention.- No computer animation. Perhaps 15-20 years from now some computer animated cartoon with a Halloween theme will be considered a classic. Right now they are just too flashy and techie to have that warm look that classic animation has.
- The cartoon doesn't have to be black and white, but it is certainly a plus.
- Anything from 20 years ago or older is up for grabs, with the exception of The Raven in the Simpsons Treehouse of Horror I. That is circa 1990.
- An intriguing story or premise.
- Quality animation. See the Disney short - The Skeleton Dance. Amazing stuff.
- A great/interesting soundtrack gets you some bonus points.
- The one criteria that has a moving scale for every viewer - nostalgia. Some are classics just because we remember watching them as kids and the fond memories associated with them. See "It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown."

Legend of Sleepy Hollow - Disney
I love the songs in this one with Bing Crosby doing the vocals.2 points
It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown
Is the animation great? Not really. Is the story compelling? No. Why is this on the list?
Because if brings back fond memories of my childhood and of the fun I had trick or treating around the neighborhood without fear of abduction or poisoning.1 point
Donald Duck - Trick or Treat
A beautifully animated Disney short. Donald's nephews come trick or treating and he pranks them. The nephews meet up with a witch who helps them get their treats from Uncle Donald.1 point
Garfield's Halloween Adventure
This 1985 Garfield cartoon had pretty good animation and a neat story featuring pirate ghosts chasing Garfield and Odie.1 point
The Simpson's Treehouse of Horror I
This is a Classic Halloween Cartoon just for the superbly done "The Raven" featuring the voice talents of James Earl Jones as the narrator.
Definite favorite of mine even though it aired well after my childhood.1 point
Mickey Mouse - Haunted House
I just love how much went in to the old black and white Disney cartoons. I think there is more artistic work in this than one of the too numerous "cartoons" produced today.
Oops, there I go sounding like an old curmudgeon. :)

- My personal favorite is "The Halloween Tree" by Ray Bradbury...the Cartoon Network animated it and Leonard Nimoy not only voice some characters, but did narration...watch it every year to "get in the spirit"!

Do they make Classic Halloween Cartoons anymore?
Fetching blurbs now... please stand byYes, and the evidence is . . .
No, the last "classic" was the Garfield Halloween Special circa 1985
BackPorchView says:
Not really. I watched the computer animated Monster House and while the premise was intriguing the results were less than spectacular.
