Halloween divination - find out who you will marry!

Apples are thrown into a tub of water and the guests are invited to duck their heads in to retrieve an apple. Before putting the apples into the water, a slice can be cut out and replaced with a slip of paper revealing their fortune. Such as 'You will be rich and prosperous' or 'Your future husband will be handsome and strong' or 'Your lover is deceiving you'.

If you carry out these old country superstitions it is said you will see who will be your future husband.

THE MIRROR
Retire into a dark room with a lighted candle. Place the candle infront of a mirror and gaze into the glass. At the same time, you must be eating an apple or combing your hair. After a few moments it is said that the face of your future husband wil appear over your shoulder.

THE SALTED HERRING
If you eat a salted herring just before going to bed, it is said that your future husband will appear in a dream, carrying a glass of water with which to quench your thirst.

Girls should go into a field at Halloween and scatter hemp seeds, chanting as they do so:
Hempseed I sow thee
Come after me and show me.
On turning around, each girl should see a vision of the man she will marry.YOUR STUFF HERE

This one could get messy!
Put a heap of mashed potato on the a plate and hide in it, a ring, a coin, a button, a heart-shaped charm, a shell and a key. Turn out the lights in the room and let each person, armed with a fork try to find the objects. The one who gets the ring will wed first; the coin signifies wealth; the button, spinsterhood; the heart, passionate love; the shell, long journeys; the key, great success and power.

Put 4 cups on the table in a circle. In one cup put a ring, one cup a silver coin, another cup a piece of heather and leave one cup empty. Those taking part are blindfolded and must walk slowly around the table three times and then touch one of the cups. The first person to touch the cup with the heather in will be the first to wed. Anyone selecting the coin will never be poor, the ring denotes devoted love and the empty cup represents a single life.

Couples sit around an open fire on Halloween. Those wishing to know if they will be happy together, each place a nut in the fire. If the nuts glow or smoulder, then the couple are well suited to each other. But if the nuts burst, crackle or fly apart, then the couple will quarrel a lot.

Two girls, blindfolded must walk into a field of cabbages and wander around until they find a cabbage stalk and pull it up. If the stalk is long, their husband will be tall, if crooked, their husband will be crooked in mind and body. If the stalk is soft, their husband will be weak-willed, or a strong stalk indicates a strong self-willed man. Earth clinging to the stalk indicates much wealth, whilst a clean stalk means poverty.
