Halloween Costume for a Big Girl

My search for a Costume for Halloween 2010

Ive always been a "Big Girl" Ive been on diets galore all my life. Yes I have been successful on the odd occasion and squeezed myself into a size 16. It never lasts though and however hard I try my weight creeps back up and I am looking at sizes 20plus again.
Not being that interested in fashion as a whole that isn't a problem for most of the time except when we get to this time of year and I am on the look for Halloween outfits again.

Oh how I long to be able to go along to the local discount store and pick up a sexy devil costume for a fiver but it isn't to be so I have to search a bit more and pay a bit more too.

Choosing a flattering costume for me

So my first quest was to decide on an outfit that would be fitting to the theme (Something scary) and flattering to my body type and not make me look like a big heffalump. Also it had to be something that was comfortable to wear all night.
I'd already done a Gothic Angel the year before and before that I made my own costume that was a bit rubbish. I used a Black bin bag painted my face grey with a big black Spider on my cheek and a hat with a Spider on it. I was quite embarrassed that year. It definitely wasn't flattering and although making your own costume can be a great idea - It wasn't for me as it just looked cheap and nasty.

So for 2010 I was prepared to go all out and spend a bit of cash to get a good looking costume.
As I was searching eBay and other online retail outlets I came across this little piece. I decided that I could use this as a start and build a great looking Witch costume around it. I got excited then as I was on my way to a Good Halloween costume...

I now have my Theme - Sexy Witch (Or not so sexy in my case)
All I need now to complete the outfit is
Wig
Make -up
Witch's cape
Witch's hat
Broomstick

Got to choose a Wig

Now that I know I am going to be dressing as a witch I can look for a good wig. I love wigs and I know that as the costume has Green in it, then the hair has to be Green. I checked out eBay again as I knew that I could get myself a good cheap bargain. In the shops, Wigs can be as much as £15-20.
So my goal is to spend around £5

The best thing to buy when looking for Halloween Make-up if a good white base. Apply it with a good make-up sponge to get an even layer.

I chose this White Stage Make up as it also acts as a great base for other colours. You put it on and it stays on all night no matter how hot and sweaty you get.

A tutorial for help with applying Witch Make-up

I decided not to go with the stage make-up in the end. I chose to put my regular foundation on. I added eyeliner and Mascara and drew on a black heart on my cheek for a little bit of Glamour. I thought that Going a bit sexy and Glamorous was better than going for the Evil ugly witch.

Need a cape

Well I didn't need a cape but but I wanted one as the Witch's dress only had strappy sleeves and I didn't like to show off my bare arms. Again unfortunately I couldn't just buy a £1 cape from the Pound shop as this wouldn't fit me so I went back to trusty eBay to find a nice large MANSIZE cape that would fit round me and cover up my bare arms and back.

The Witching hour Arrives

I was nearly done.
I managed to pick up the final touches - Hat and Broomstick from the local £store and 99p store. The long slinky gloves came with the dress along with a drawstring bag and I was ready to Party on All Hallows Eve right to Midnight and beyond...

So I have proved that it can be done and a Big Girl like me can find a great Halloween costume but you have to be prepared to do a bit more digging and look in the places that maybe you wouldn't usually look. I think the earlier you look the better chance of getting the size you need at the price you can pay.
