Horrible Food For Halloween

Halloween is a time to really have fun with food. The more horrible it looks the better your kids and party guests will like it!

Of course, you can still have all the traditional things popular at this time of year - candy apples and popcorn - alongside the slime with blood (green jello with strawberry sauce).

You will find lots of recipes on this page for the traditional and the revolting!

Toffee Apples in Custard Sauce

What You Need:

2 Golden Delicious apples, peeled, cored, and halved
1/2 C water
2 TBSP apple juice
1/4 C sugar
2 tsp. cornstarch
1 C half-and-half
1 egg white
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
1/4 C butter toffee candy, crushed
4 fresh mint sprigs

How to Make It:

In a microwave save 2 qt dish place the apple halves so they just touch.
Mix together the water and apple juice in a measuring cup.
Pour the mixture over the top of the apples being sure to cover them well.
Place the dish in the microwave on high power for 4 ½ minutes.
Rotate the apples ¼ turn after 2 minutes.
Apples are done when fork tender.
Remove and set to the side while making the sauce.
Toss together the sugar and cornstarch in a microwave safe measuring cup.
Pour in the half and half and mix to moisten the dry ingredients.
Microwave on high 2 minutes until the mixture begins to boil.
Place the egg white into a small bowl and beat slightly with a fork.
Add about 1 TBSP of the sugar mixture to the egg white and blend together.
Place the egg mixture into the measuring cup and stir well.
Add the vanilla and stir well to incorporate.
Return to the microwave on high power and cook 1 minute.
Allow the mixture to stand in the microwave 5 minutes.
Remove from the microwave and spoon the mixture into the bottom of a serving dish.
Place the apple halves on top of the custard mixture.
Sprinkle the apples with the crushed toffee and garnish each with a mint sprig before serving.

Serves 4

If you are serving this dish to adults brandy can be substituted for the apple juice to give this dish a different flavor. When adding the sugar mixture to the egg white only add 1 TBSP and stir in quickly to prevent the egg white from cooking.
