Halloween Formal Evening Wear

Choosing Halloween Formal Wear with Care

Formal occasions, events, and parties scheduled around Halloween can be tricky to dress for. Sometimes the invitation is not exactly clear on the expectations of dress.

And there's only one thing worse than arriving at a formal occasion to find that you're the only one not dressed in a costume - being the only person who is dressed in costume.

Grecian and Goddess Style Gowns

A long white grecian or one-shouldered style dress looks very elegant for an ordinary event, but, should you find yourself at a costume party, you can claim that you're dressed as a Greek or Roman goddess.

A Little Black Dress

A short black dress can be dressed up or down very easily and turned into a costume by adding a hat from another costume such as this Mad Hatter Ladies Costume. Keep some stylish jewellery in your purse in case you need to turn it into a formal cocktail dress. And if you're really not sure what to expect, take along a long black skirt so that you can switch to black-tie-formal in an instant.

A Little Bit Goth

If you get the mix right a gothic outfit can pass for either a costume or elegant formal attire that's just a little bit eccentric.

Suits You

A suit can look very smart, particularly as cocktail wear, or dress it up with a bowler hat and umbrella and pretend your costume is British. This is one for the guys too.

Vintage

Vintage is so fashionable right now that no one will bat an eyelid if you style yourself with a 50s retro feel. But it can work beautifully as a costume too.

Marilyn Monroe

Or borrow a dress idea from an icon like Marilyn Monroe or Audrey Hepburn. Keep the wig in your purse just in case it's needed, but the dress can work as elegant formal wear on its own.

Masquerade, Venetian, and Mardi Gras Masks

A small masquerade mask is ideal for slipping into your purse just in case you need a little something to dress up a plain outfit and turn it into a costume. If you don't need it, no one need know you brought it.

Wigging It

A wig is easy to slip into a clutch bag and can save your (lack of) costume by giving you something to differentiate yourself from ordinary formal wear if you got it wrong.

Congrats on being a fellow SquidBoo King (Queen?). Bringing a mask is Brilliant. I usually wear black, so could be in a costume or not.

There are a couple of these I'd wear when it wasn't Halloween. Congrats on being a finalist in the SquidBoo Contest!
