Halloween Fun For Kids

Halloween Fun for Children

Halloween is all about fun.

It isn't just about the day itself, but the excitement leading up to it. If you think back to when you were a child, part of the fun was the halloween parties, fun games and those delightful halloween crafts that your created at home and school.

Fun for Halloween doesn't have to be expensive and you can do it in a green way, just by using things you already have around the house, add a little imagination, a drop of love, a splash of creativity, a dopling of Halloween magic and you have a recipe for Halloween Fun!

Creative homemade costumes for kids

Make your own costume

Most parents get stuck trying to put together something at the last minute for their kids to where for halloween. With a little planning and creativity you can get your kids involved in creating their own costume and challenge them to help you create them.

Start with a bit of art tonight, or this weekend. Get out some paper and crayons, or colored pencils. Ask your child to think about what they would dress up as for Halloween if they could be anything that they wanted to be. Help them ignite their imagination and creativity, drawing their costume.

Then brainstorm with your child on how you can create this costume at home. Think about things that you have at home or might be able to gather from friends or relatives, yard sales, or thrift shops. Start saving those cardboard boxes now. Don't throw away old clothes that might come in useful to cut up and create great costumes. Curtains, sheets, bedspreads, shower curtains, cardboard cans can make great stovetop hats.

If you are stuck for ideas or aren't sure how to make something, check out this page at Family Fun online. They have created over 100 homemade costume ideas for you to look through.

Vote for your favorite Halloween Costume

When you look at these pictures just think about how you could create the same look using things you have at home.

Bull Dozer Boy, some cardboard boxes, glue and paint.

The Pirate girl, a bandana, cut out a cardboard sword, maybe let them decorate the handle with "jewels" (glued on crystals), I would add an eyepatch with some black material glued over the top of thin cardboard. A little vest, a white shirt with blousy sleaves, some shorter pants or pants rolled up, and boots.

Batgirl: You could use a black plastic garbage sack, reinforces it with some glued in poster board panels or thin cardboard. With a little paint and scissors you could create the entire look.

Towelie: You would have to experiment with this, maybe glue two towels to a very stiff piece of cardboard at the top, sew the sides shut leaving arm holes. I would have the person inside where a hat to help hold the piece above their head.

Ghosts: A great last minute costume, always save white sheets, with a marker or fabric paint for eyes...and you have a ghost!

Little German Uni-brow girl: You can see this look can be done with clothing you have and some make up.

Adorable Baby Pirate: A bandana with an earring clipped to it (make it too big for the baby to choke on, or get poked with because they will probably pull on it, you know babies, a bit of eyebrow pencil for a mustache and baby has a costume.

Free Pumpkin Carving Stencils Online

Looking for ideas on how to carve a pumpkin?

Pumpkin carving is always fun for the whole family! Children should definitely be supervised by a parent during this activity.

When my kids were very little, we would cover the table with newspapers.

They got to choose their pumpkin, many farmers will let the kids go out in the field and choose their own pumpkin, often on hay rides which is another fun day to spend at Halloween with your kids.

With small children they can draw how they wanted their lids cut and the adult can cut them off. Then let them remove the seeds, what parent doesn't mind their kids being the ones that do this! Large spoons help scrape the seeds out really well.

Let them decide what they want to carve in their pumpkin, using their own imagination they can draw the faces, or let them choose a free pumpkin carving stencil from one of the sites below.

Once they draw it on their pumpkin, using your best judgement on their age and capabilities either cut it out for them, let them remove the pieces, help them guiding their hands, or if you feel they are old enough to do it safely just supervise watching them create their own masterpieces. I loved helping them, and creating my own pumpkin carving with them.

We always saved the pumpkin seeds, washed them well, placed on a cookie sheet, added a little salt and baked them in the oven until they were roasted to perfection!

Fun Halloween Games for Kids

Create your own family fun for Halloween

Throwing a Halloween Party for kids and not sure what games to include?

Here are some fun ideas:

1. Pin the Bone on the Skeleton
Take one of those jointed skeleton decorations and remove one of the jointed bones. Hang it on the wall at the childrens level. Cover their eyes with a bandana, spin them around and let them try to find the skeleton on the wall blindfolded. Mark the spot with the childrens initials, on a little paper spider, the one closest to where the bone should be gets a prize of some sort, give them all something for participating.

2. Mixed up Pumpkin Game
Using kid safe scissors have the children each cut out a pumpkin, and seperate eyes, nose, mouth, ears, hats and whatever else they want from construction paper. They tape their pumpkin to the wall or a large piece of white paper on the wall. Have them mix up all the faces and each on pick on thing out of the bucket and glue it onto any of the pumpkins. Just listen to the laughter as the faces get funnier and funnier.

3. You can have gourd decorating contests, using paints, beads, yarn, etc.

4. Gourd or apple races, using a broom to push them to the finish line.

5. Create your own Halloween treasure hunt, hiding items, and clues to the next one. Use your imagination and make it exciting and fun.

6. You could also do a scavenger hunt around your own home. I do not recommend sending them out to neighboring houses it isn't safe.

7. Grab the Ghost: Family fun (I love that site) has a great idea for a game called
Grab the Ghost.
