Halloween Homemade Costumes For Kids

Homemade children's Halloween costumes can be diverting to do whenever the children lend a hand. However, I advise you to consider the monetary value and work you put into this job if the kids are not taking part before starting the job as it might be more economical to save your time and purchase a costume at the local store.

A good way to make sure you don't pass exaggerated time on creating a costume from the raw material on up, is to commence with worn out wearing apparels from the wardrobe. This will let you focus most on the enjoyable part your kids enjoy - creating the decorations or projecting the party.

And so here you are going to learn how to make almost free Halloween costumes for the kids, just by using existing clothes and adding some accessories or paints...

Enjoy :)

The Witch

Among the most popular Halloween symbols are the witches.

They're almost always green, disgusting, warty and use to wear pointy black hats and Halloween would not be what it is without witches.

Here's how to make a witch with well-worn clothes:

    • A black suit or
A black skirt and a black long sleeved shirt
    • A cape or a black jacket
    • A conical hat
--> you can even make your own conical hat out of a box of cereals
    • A big green noose
    • Some face painting
    That's it!

The Vampire

One of the most basic attractions of Halloween have always been Vampires! And the most popular vampire has always been Count Dracula. What would be Halloween without this timeless symbol; half human, half bat; who feeds himself with the blood of his victims and whose ennemy number one is... sunlight?

Both kids and adults like Vampires; which remain a best-selling Halloween costume theme.

A basic low-priced outfit that would be made up of black pants and a black long sleeved turtle top is the principal component of a good homemade Halloween costume.

Only supply a dark cape and fake long teeth and you have a vampire's costume.

Great idea! I always do our Halloween costumes myself

Pastiche says:

I always make home made costumes - it's half the fun!

prosperity66 says:

You're right, Brenda, I used to make my son's costumes just like my grand mother made mine when I was a kid; but now that my son is 17, he doesn't want me to make a costume nor wear one... Just hope he'll change his mind when he'll become a father :)

Treasures-By-Brenda says:

We used to do our costumes ourselves. Now that we have teenagers costumes are not always required...

prosperity66 says:

While I have two left hands (yes, I do, lol) I always used to make my son's costumes myself; which allowed him to win almost all costume contests he took part in!

No, I don't want to spend my time in making my own costumes

The Straw Man

aka the Scarecrow.

Farmers made use of scarecrows in order to prevent nuisible animals and birds to hurt their crops. Nowadays, straw men are also entire part of the list of Fall symbols and so they entered the Halloween fun!

There is in all likelihood in your closet a old, damaged and old pair of jeans and shirt. You would even get an old straw hat.

From that primary outfit, fix a bit of straw around the cuffs of the shirt and trousers. When finished, you will focus your attention into face painting and overall look.

The Animals

Children love animals and monochrome clothes can be great for animal Halloween costumes in addition to some accessories such as ears and mitten.

Costume stores have partial costumes such as masks, tails, noses and ears ready to supply these features to your elementary costume.

In order to make such costumes, you need monochrome sweatsuits and fabric paint.

    Here are a few examples:

    • Dots on brown outfits would become the starting point of a Scooby-Doo costume.
    • Black strips on a yellow suit would make a great tiger.
    • Black dots on a black suit would become a Dalmatian.
    • Ligh and dark brown dots would get you a nice giraffe.
    • A black and white suit with appropriate accessories will make your kid become a Cat.
The list is almost endless... so go now create your animal Halloween costume!

The Bat

Here's a costume I made for my son when he was 4 years old (a Carnival costume as Halloween wasn't adopted by Belgium yet).

    Material:

    • A black sweatsuit
    • 2 pieces of black fabric
    • 1 box cereals
Use the following template to make the bat wings -->

    • Cut two wings out of the black fabric as well as four triangles. Cut two triangles out of a cereal box.
    • Sew a wing under each sleeve and along every side of the sweater.
    • Sew two triangles together and insert a cardboard triangle.
    • Do it with the remaining triangles too.
    • Sew one triangle on both sides of a hat or a cowl.
That's it, you have now a nice Halloween bat costume for your kid!

The Pirate or Buccaneer

During the previous centuries, pirates used to sail the seas and rob ships of diverse fleets blind.

A highly popular movie recently studied their lifestyle: "Pirates of the Carribean", starring Johnny Depp.

The results that came with the movie have been outstanding and a huge amount of people adopted that kind of Halloween costume theme.

Here's an easy and quick way to make a fantastic Pirate Halloween costume for your kids: this only requires an old stripped shirt and cut down well-worn pants.

Add a pirate hat on the head and you'll only have to set up the accessories like an eye patch and some face painting.

The Classic Skeleton

There's no Halloween without at least ONE skeleton!

A very sinister Halloween homemade costume can be obtained by utilizing glow-in-the-dark paint on a black outfit.

All you have to do is to draw a skeleton front and back and you have the classic Halloween skeleton costume.

As you can see, there's always a way to make an incredible Halloween costume even while on a budget and for next to nothing.

There's no need to pass so many hours cutting out and sewing pieces of textile and this way, most of your work in creating your new Halloween costumes will go into the funniest part of it: spending time with your kids.

Happy Halloween!
