Children's Costume For Halloween

Halloween costumes can stay in a toybox all year long for role-play and dress up. That's what is so wonderful about not purely Halloween themed costumes - they need not be used only on Halloween. Exquisite mythical costumes are sure to make all the dressed-up dreams come true. Time-honored traditions like Halloween parties, yummy treats and decoration are great, but being able to use a costume during the rest of the year is a bonus for any parent.

Halloween Costume Ideas For Kids

Marianne Szymanski said in her book Toy Tips: "There are plenty of not-so-scary Halloween toys for kids to celebrate the season. Toy companies make themed toys as alternatives to candy for trick or treat, to be used as goody bag stuffers and fun party favors". In addition, she recommends costumes and toys that fit Halloween theme, but are not so tightly themed as to be useless the rest of the year.

She understands what I discovered with the Thomas the Tank Engine Halloween costume - if costumes is not Halloween specific, kids will wear them all year round! My daughter got her Thomas costume for Halloween, but she wore it on plenty of other occasions, often simply putting it on to go with me for a walk - it was a treat for her, and she had plenty of fun.

In her book, Szymanski mentions that she prefers toys that "have multiple uses beyond Halloween that can be played over and over again." She suggests buying little tubs of Play Doh, bags of puzzles, themed stickers and small packs of bubbles. She also stresses buying in bulk, but be sure to check dates - know how long will edible stuff remain - well, edible.

Even stuff like those big plastic orange pumpkins can be reused to make art buckets to hold non-toxic paints, brushes, glue sticks and washable markers. If you roll up individual sheets of paper, and tie them with some leftover string or ribbons, kids can pretend they are parchments with treasure maps or secret stories. So roll them up, put them in a pumpkin bucket, and let kids' imagination soar.

Other ideas Szymanski has for reuse - witch hats and Spiderman masks can be reused for "theater play," Halloween pencils are great for homework, while ghost puppets could make a great addition to story time. With a little bit of forethought, your Halloween purchases can do double and triple duty - saving you time and money, while delighting your kids all year round.
