Great ideas for a green Halloween!
  • sousababy Sep 7, 2011 @ 8:02 am | delete
Not only eco-friendly, but also much safer to use these inside pumpkins. I have heard about too many folks suffering minor burns (and even animals) by coming into contact with candles around Halloween. Great lens!

Very well done lens with lots of cool selections. The LED lights are great for decorating in any season--I remember how hot our old Christmas tree bulbs used to get when I was a kid.

    Nice lens! Squidliked :)!
  • Greekgeek Sep 15, 2010 @ 10:55 pm | delete
    I'm pagan. I haveta!
    I make my own candles.
Of course that's not entirely green; stove takes electricity. But candles last a few years!
  • aj2008 Sep 23, 2010 @ 3:03 am | delete
Looking forward to perhaps seeing a lens on how to make candles ;)
  • Greekgeek Oct 11, 2010 @ 12:48 pm | delete
You know what? I've been pondering that lens, or that article, which you encouraged me to write.

It's harder than I thought. I haven't made candles in several years; I'm still using old ones.

When I ponder the hours on the stove, the wax, the paraffin, sterin, plastic or metal molds, dyes and wicks I've bought from the store with no idea how they're manufactured (it's probably not green), the packaging -- I come to the sober realization that my way of making candles is not eco-friendly at all.

I must learn to make soy or beeswax candles. I have made candles from beeswax, but again, I don't know how it's manufactured, and I have to mix it with sterin or they just melt in a blob when I burn them.

One thing I can say is that instead of using commercially-bought molds, one can make them with wrapping paper tubes or any rigid, tube-shaped container, if there's a way to peel it off afterwards, and if you seal the bottom carefully. I've done a number of Pringles can pillar candles.

But it's TOUGH. The more one thinks about eco-friendly processes, the more one realizes just how many things one does aren't as green as they could be.

Thank you for the lesson, and I'm sorry I didn't have the answer I thought I did.

I guess I can just say: thank goodness for eco-friendly LED lights! They really are a great invention.

I love my black LED candles this year for Halloween. They're not only "green", but also very kid-friendly. I wish there were more options available for solar outdoor Halloween decorations...hopefully something to look forward to in the future. Great Halloween topic and list of resources. :-)

It's nice to see that Halloween has become environmentally friendly. We vampires don't really care for too much lighting but if it's green, I guess we'll have to put some up this Halloween! ;-P

Nice idea for a lens AJ. My kids love Halloween!! I always like to make biccies, cut out with round cutters and then let the kids go mad with icing to make into spiders webs or monster faces, etc....

I had no idea about the candles! I'll certainly be looking for beeswax or soy in the future. Apparently, it's been a good growing season for the pumpkins here in Hampshire so there should be plenty to choose from this year! Super lens Aj which I an sure will get LOTD at the end of October ;)
