Zombie Cake

Bringing new life to the party with zombie fingers clawing out of a chocolate cake.

Zombie Grave CakeThis is an easy and elegant cake to use for your Halloween centerpiece. Just have a simple chocolate cake with fingers 'digging' their way to the top. Place some cake crumbs (cut a sliver of your cake off before frosting it and crumble it around the fingers) to loosen the dirt on this Halloween masterpiece. The pictured cake is actually Grand Marnier Chocolate Cake with Grand Marnier / Bittersweet Chocolate Grenache.

For the zombie fingers themselves, I would follow the recipe presented on this page for finger cookies, placing them over a tube rather than flat on a cookie sheet when baking. Frost them with a ghastly pallor-colored glaze and use almond slices for the fingernails. In the photo, marzipan fingers are used.

Finger Cookies

Finger cookies can be made in a snap (no pun intended) and are a real hit! A vegan recipe website has great illustrations for their bloody finger cookie recipe. These truly are easy to make and very entertaining! Another (non-vegan) recipe for finger cookies too. With all the candy at Halloween though, vegan may be a wise choice!

Halloween Cookie Frosting

Use Royal Icing To Get Those Designs to stay?

You see a lot of fantastic halloween cupcakes, halloween cakes and halloween cookies with intricate designs. Many of these have a spiderweb effect. Some, like gingerbread men, have skeletons drawn on them. What sort of frosting do you have to use to make your designs stay? The trick is to use royal icing. I've featured a recipe for the stuff from cakemasters Wilton themselves. The main ingredient for royal icing is also somewhat difficult to find: meringue powder. Meringue powder is used to avoid the salmonella risks associated with raw egg whites. Be sure to order your meringue powder well in advance of need so you're not caught off guard with no supplies on hand!

The Centerpiece

Puts Some Brains In It!

Don't be a melon brain, learn how to make one at the Disney Familyfun.com! Let this melon centerpiece find a place at your 'head' table!

All eyes will be on this dish!

Gelatinous EyeballsIts not difficult to make your own gelatinous eerie eyeballs. These are made of lemon gelatin, pineapple juice and cream cheese. The iris and pupils? Get some food coloring, a brush and get creative. Spooky.

Eerie Eyeballs
(Yields approximately 9 dozen bite-sized eyeballs)

  • 3 oz (small box) lemon gelatin (can be sugar-free)

  • 1 cup hot water

  • 1/2 cup miniature marshmallows

  • 1 cup pineapple juice

  • 8 oz cream cheese (can be lowfat/Neufchatel)

Note: if you are using the melon baller method, add an extra package of plain gelatin to your mixture.

  1. Dissolve lemon gelatin in 1 cup water in double boiler, add marshmallows and stir to melt.

  2. Remove the gelatin mix from heat. Add pineapple juice and cream cheese and beat until well blended. Allow the mixture to cool slightly.

  3. Prepare round ice cube trays or any other "eyeball molds" by spraying them lightly with cooking spray. Pour your mix into the molds and leave them to chill and set in the fridge. Alternately, pour the mix into a deep ceramic dish and chill until firm. Using a melon baller, scoop full balls of the mixture.

  4. To decorate, use liquid food coloring and a clean paintbrush. Use black food coloring for the pupils and another color for the irises.
