Pumpkin carving parties are popular with all ages, from preschool through seniors. Everyone likes to hack into a pumpkin and create a unique Jack O'Lantern by carving or sculpting the pumpkin flesh.

Pumpkin Carving Basics
Perfect Halloween Pumpkin Design Tips
No matter how simple or fancy your choice of pumpkin carving or decorating design, pumpkin carving preparation follows a few basic steps. Here's how to clean and prep your Halloween pumpkin for carving, with or without a stencil pattern.
- Select a firm pumpkin without bruises or blemishes - unless you want them as part of your design. Clean off any soil or plant residue.
- Insert a heavy, sharp knife into the top of the pumpkin about 3 inches from the step. Cut in a circular pattern around the top of the pumpkin's "skull" to remove the top. I like to cut a "key slot" into the incision so I can easily fit the top back on.
- Remove the top then scoop out pumpkin seeds and stringy flesh from inside the pumpkin, then scrape the pumpkin interior clean.
- Select and enlarge a pumpkin carving design stencil and transfer the pattern to the pumpkin, or draw a freehand design on the pumpkin shell using a pencil or marker.
- Carve your Halloween pumpkin!
After you've finished carving your pumpkin you might want to protect the cut surfaces to help preserve your work of art. For traditional cutout carved pumpkins you can coat the cut edges with a thin layer of petroleum jelly or spray all the nonskin surfaces with a light coating of Jack O Lantern preservative. For surface carved pumpkins you can protect your art work by using the special alcohol and paint preservation method.
Alternate Method Instead of cutting open the top of your pumpkin to clean it out, cut a hole in the back or bottom and remove the gooey innards. Carve your design and use a tea light or glow stick to illuminate your carved pumpkin design.
I like to let my carved pumpkins age naturally. Pumpkins get more hideous and frightful as they shrink and rot.

I started painting pumpkin faces 40 years ago with my daughter who was too young to wield a knife and we were uber-safety concious about fire. But when I grew up we carved our Jack O Lanterns and lighted them with a candle. I really like to get artistic when I decorate pumpkins for Halloween, so the new carving tools and techniques appeal to me.

Pumpkin Guts - Garbage or Snack?
Do you save the seeds or toss 'em after you carve your pumpkin?
We like to clean out the pumpkin innards, separate the seeds and toast them to eat as a snack. Sometimes we save a few seeds to plant in our garden for the following year. The rest of the mush removed from inside the carved pumpkin ends up in our compost heap.
