Trick Or Treat Safety

As a child I always loved Halloween and had the best time with my family and friends trick or treating. I will always have those great memories and I want my children to have that same experience.

When my boys were little I always dressed up with them and went trick or treating, what a great time we all had getting dressed up and going door to door seeing who could get the most candy.

Following some easy safety measures can keep your children safe every Halloween.
  • Younger children should always go out trick or treating with a responsible adult. If there is a group of children 2 or 3 or all of the parents can go along for some Halloween fun.
  • There are actual start and stop times for trick or treating in some towns, this can make it easier for your neighbors to know when the children will be coming to their doors. Make sure that if your town has a curfew that you stick to the time.
  • Know what route your older children will be taking and make sure that it is safe. Set a time that they need to return home. Make sure that they have a cell phone in case they need to get in touch with you.
  • Let your older know that they are not to cut through back yards or dark areas if they are alone. Make sure they know to stay on the route which you planned, that it is well lit with lots of people.
  • Make sure that your children know not to eat any candy until they bring them home to be examined by you. Throw away any open candy and you just might be able to grab a few of your favorites.
  • Children can get easily sidetracked on Halloween with all the costumes and excitement. Make sure your child knows never go into the home of a stranger or get into their car.
  • Make sure your child carries a flashlight or glow stick on their costume to make them more visible to cars.
  • If your child is old enough to trick or treat by themselves, let them know that they should stay together as a group.

Drive Safely On Halloween

The neighborhood streets are swarming with all sorts of of scary goblins and witches and even some super heroes. The increased pedestrian traffic along with being preoccupied by watching your children and looking at all the great trick or treaters costumes may cause you to not pay as much attention as you should. Children may not see your vehicle as they dart between cars so it is up to you, the driver, to drive extra carefully and you should have a fun filled and safe Halloween
  • Don't use a cell phone while driving on Halloween night.
  • Pay extra close attention to all traffic. Children like to walk along the curbs and cutting across the street to get to other homes. Keep looking all around you as you drive.
  • Drive below the speed limit during trick-or-treating hours on Halloween. This will allow you time to break if you see a child dart in front of your car.
  • Do not drive around other vehicles that have stopped in the roadway, they could be dropping off children.
  • It might be easy for your child to mistake someone else's car for your car with the excitement of Halloween. Place a glow stick on the dashboard of your car so your child will be able to recognize your car.
  • Make sure your child carries a flashlight or glow stick to make them more visible to cars. If your child is carrying a flashlight, let them know to never shine it in the face of a driver, this can temporarily blind the driver.
