Seven Sinister Halloween themed dishes

Get some lovely spooky halloween food!

The halloween scene is set, you have the musics and the costumes and perhaps even a killer movie line up. But wait - are you just going to eat some bog-standard food?

Perhaps bog-dwelling food would be more appropriate! Or even how about getting some grub... live grubs that is! There are a number of dishes you can make for Halloween that look the part, are spooky, kooky and all together ookie, but tasty too.

The line up includes 'orrible h'ordeuvres, monstrous main meals, spine tingling treats, seriously spooky soups and portentous puddings. Enjoy!

Evil bloodshot eyeballs

Type: Sugary chilled pudding

Zombie eyeballs anyone? As the title image for the lens shows, these look like quite convincing bloodshot eyeballs. We originally got the idea form an Instructables article on edible zombie eyeballs, with our own adaptations. The image on this paragraph was another earlier attempt we made at the same.

Ingredients
  • 1 Can of lychees in syrup, stones out
  • Blueberries - washed
  • Icecream with strawberries - Carte D'or has a perfect one with streaks of strawberry.
  • Optionally- strawberry or raspberry sauce.

Preparation time
Minutes

Method
First get a plate or bowl for each guest, and put a little of the strawberry ice cream in each.

Take the lychees, drain off the syrup (we use that elsewhere), and then fill the cavity of each with some of the ice cream, ensuring to get some of the red bits and white bits in there.

You then push a blueberry into the cavity, making the ice cream ooze out a bit. It is best to do this over the plate. Now place your ghastly looking eyeball into the icecream on the plate with the blueberry facing up. Repeat with a few more, and optionally squirt a little strawberry/raspberry sauce on it.

Variations
You could try some Raspberry jelly with the ice cream if you can not get that red/white mix with your ice cream. Some lemon jelly could give a little Yellow ooze for extra gruesome effect.

Another horrible eyeball treat

Type: White chocolate confection

These are a bit more involved to make. perhaps you could make some of these, and mix the two eyeball types for a real screamer of a combination...

Pumpkin PIe

Type: Creamy hot dessert

A pumpkin my wife carved...Nothing quite says Halloween like pumpkin pie (although I know that it is also a thanksgiving food in the US). When done correctly it is slightly sweet (not too much soo), a little fruity and very nice a creamy. A personal favourite, made even better by the fact that we are eating from the pumpkin lantern we carved. Mmmmm..

Ingredients
  • Pumpkin of course! - just the flesh, no seeds or rind please. Chopped into chunky bits - about an inch cubed..
  • Pastry - you can make your own, or get some shortcrust and sweeten it a little to your taste. Sorry - no pastry recipe here...
  • 3 large eggs - separated
  • Brown sugar
  • A little cinnamon - only a pinch or so
  • A pinch of ground nutmeg
  • Some ground or grated ginger - only half a teaspoon or so
  • 1/2 cup of double cream

Preparation Time: 20/30 minutes.
Cooking time: 90 minutes.

Method
Preheat your oven to around 180 C, and grease a tin.

Steam the pumkin flesh, and while it is steaming start to whisk the eggs. Add in the cream and spices, and stir well in. Once the pumkin has been steamed, drain excess water and whisk in with the mixture.

Line the tin with the pastry, and spoon in the mixture evenly. Place into the oven, and bake until firm around the edges, but a little springy in the middle.

Allow to cool a little - can be served hot with a dollop of ice cream, or cold with some whipped cream.

All that remains is to carve your pumpkin - this rather nice example is my wife's handiwork.

Don't throw away those pumpkin seeds!

Type: Crispy treat

Roasted Pumpkin SeedsInstead of throwing them away, pumkin seeds can be roasted, with a little salt and spice to make a tasty crispy nutritious treat.
This will take about 20 minutes or so coarsely taking off excess flesh and then around 15-20 minutes cooking time.

Severed Sausage Fingers

Type: Savoury meaty

Fancy fingers for supper? These look so much like severed digits, although they are actually simply sausages, with some fries and ketchup, with bones from chicken wings inserted.

For full details - take a look at the instructable: Finger Food. Perhaps you could serve these with some beans, and other bits.

Roasted monster tentacles anyone?

Type: Cold sweet

Roast Tentacle Au JusWith a glistening translucent look, and what appear to be muscles and veins running down the inside, you'd be forgiven for thinking this had come from some unfortunate sea creature or unlucky space visitor.

An instructable has set sliced fruit into a jelly (Jello to the US people) mould that they've crafted themselves, giving the impression of veins and suckers. The writer has suggested the technique can be expanded upon and perhaps you could come up with other interesting sweet and tasty jelly treat. I would perhaps not serve it on lettuce though, given that this is based on fruit juice.

Lizard on a stick

Type: Chicken

Some survival programs and the occasional food have shown that roast lizard can be an option... Clearly it's not for everyone.
My wife once made some chicken wings for a barbecue we were going to, and skewered them such that the skewer ran the length of the wing, which was fully extended. It no longer looked much like chicken...
Which gave me an idea... Being that it was a halloween party, I took one and offered somebody a lizard on a stick - and got a raised eyebrow or two.

Basic idea:
* Prepare a marinade for the wings - garlic, ginger and a little soy.
* Make the marinade green - a little finely chopped green pepper (or chilli pepper if you like it hot).
* Marinate the wings - overnight is recommended.
* Now roast or barbecue them - 180C for 20/30 minutes - ensure the juices run clear and there are no pink bits.

Creamy Pumpkin Soup

Type: Creamy Soup!

Mmm.. I personally love pumpkin dishes - and this with a little dash of pepper is beautiful. If you've had a large pumpkin, and don't want too much pumpkin pie then this a great way to use the flesh.

Sure it is not really spooky, but it is still very much a halloween dish!
