Halloween is a contradiction of a holiday though! Filled with sweets, treats and adorable witches, black cats and pumpkins don't blink because suddenly the night is filled with scary, frightening monsters, goblins and evil witches on broomsticks!

What's really scary about Halloween this year is the economy! How will job losses and home foreclosures affect how much we can spend on Halloween costumes, trick or treat bags and candy for the neighborhood trick or treaters. Moms and Dads are finding new and creative ways to keep the fun going without breaking the bank. Say Boo to the recession and don't be scared to celebrate the holidays this year because there are lots of ways to have an awesome Happy Halloween and keep it within your family budget.

What's up with Halloween, is it a trick or treat? Keep the holiday simple and keeping your family and friends safe is the greatest gift of all.

Lots of tips for haunted house parties, fitting a costume and how to carve a pumpkin safely.
Decorating Your Home For Halloween
Safety, safety, safety!! Consider flameless candles this year instead of real ones. Be careful which candies your little ones eat and be sure they are "age appropriate" to avoid choking hazards. Make sure the length of costume works well so there are no tripping and fall hazards to ruin all the fun and be especially careful about masks or consider makeup and accessories instead of masks this year.
Fire Safety For Halloween From The NFPA
Fire Safety and planning ahead can help make this Halloween a fire-safe one. Taking simple fire safety precautions, like making sure fabrics for costumes and decorative materials are flame-resistant, can prevent fires.

During the four-year-period of 2002-2005, NFPA estimates that decorations were the item first ignited in an estimated average of 1,150 reported home structure fires per year. These fires caused an estimated average of three civilian deaths, 56 civilian injuries and $24.8 million in direct property damage per year.

Excellent resource for a fire safe home all year long.

Halloween History

History In Case You Were Wondering!

Halloween costumes are all the rage from newborns to senior citizens, but why do we wear them and how did the tradition get its start?

One story says that, on that day, the disembodied spirits of all those who had died throughout the preceding year would come back in search of living bodies to possess for the next year. It was believed to be their only hope for the afterlife. The Celts believed all laws of space and time were suspended during this time, allowing the spirit world to intermingle with the living.

Naturally, the still-living did not want to be possessed. So on the night of October 31, villagers would extinguish the fires in their homes, to make them cold and undesirable. They would then dress up in all manner of ghoulish costumes and noisily paraded around the neighborhood, being as destructive as possible in order to frighten away spirits looking for bodies to possess.

Isn't it great how something so creepy turned out to be so much fun!
