Soul Cakes: The Original "Candy" of Halloween

How did the tradition of trick-or-treating begin?

Traditionally, Soul Cakes were baked as a sacrificial food for Samhain ("Summer's End) on October 31st. This Celtic festival marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. The custom was to set these cakes out on tables with a glass of wine for the souls of the dead.

It then became the custom to hand the Soul Cakes out on Halloween (a pre-cursor to today's candy giving). The idea behind it was that a soul would be realeased from Purgartory for each cake eaten. So, on All Hallows Eve, children would go "a-souling" while singing out the following rhyme:

Soul, Soul, a soul cake!
I pray thee, good missus, a soul cake!
One for Peter, two for Paul,
three for Him what made us all!

Soul Cakes are actually more like really thick cake-like cookies which have been flavored with spices such as nutmeg, allspice, cinnamon, etc. Currants and/or raisins are also included. When the cookie is shaped, the top of each is marked with a cross before baking.

Soul Cake Recipe

3/4 cup butter
3/4 cup superfine sugar
4 cups flour, sifted
3 egg yolks
1 teaspoon mixed spice
1 teaspoon allspice
3 tablespoons currants or raisins
a little milk

1. Cream the butter and sugar together until pale in colour and fluffy in texture. Beat in the egg yolks, one at a time.

2. Mix together the flour and spices. Fold into the creamed butter mix.

3. Gently stir in the currants/raisins. Add enough milk to make a soft dough.

4. Form into flat cakes and cut each top with a knife to make a cross.

5. Bake on a well-greased baking sheet at 350 F for 10 to 15 minutes until golden.

Gooey Popcorn Globs

Popcorn is a great item to use when creating gooey type treats (as is rice crispy cereals). Mixed with marshmallows, peanut butter or some other sticky ingredient, you can shape them into all sorts of horrific treats. Try out this recipe as a favor handout at a party or to prepare for a treat for the kids at school.

1 lb. vanilla-flavor candy coating, coarsely chopped
14 cups popped popcorn
1 1/2 cups candy-coated peanut butter-flavor or chocolate pieces (M&M's or Smarties)
1 cup raisins

1. Melt the vanilla-flavored candy coating in a medium saucepan over low heat, stirring often.

2. While the candy coating is melting, in a large bowl mix together the popcorn, candy-coated pieces, and raisins.

3. Pour the melted coating over the popcorn mixture; toss gently to coat. Spread the mixture on a greased baking sheet and let cool.

4. Once it's cooled, break the popcorn mixture apart and place 1 cup of the mixture in the center of a piece of cellophane or plastic wrap. Gather the cellophane up and around the mixture to form a ball and insert a lollipop stick into the center. Tie the cellophane around the stick to secure.

Make Homemade Halloween Chocolate and Candy Suckers

When you make it, you know what's in it.

It's very easy to make your own gruesome chocolate suckers and candies. With chocolate, you just need Halloween candy molds and some chocolate melting wafers which you can usually find at most stores that sell any sort of candy making equipment. Then just melt the chocolate over low heat in a double boiler, place a sucker stick on the mold, and pour your chocolate in. Then let it harden. Warp them in orange cellophane and tie with a black ribbon.

Candies take a bit more to make as you have to carefully watch the temperature with a thermometer. Depending on the Halloween candy you plan to make, you'll need to heat the ingredients to a certain temperature before pouring into the mold. Also, you need to make sure you only use molds that are designed for candy... not chocolate.

What Else Can You Do With Halloween Candy and Treats?

Some surprising uses for all that leftover sugary concoctions

In my travels of the web, I came across some really freaky information about Halloween candies and strange science experiments. I'll add more as I find them, but here's what I've discovered so far:

This is awesome... science and Halloween come together! Who knew that chewing Wint-O-Green Lifesavers in a dark room creates a "lightening storm" in your mouth (of course, it helps to stand in front of a mirror to see the action).

Okay, this is a video that shows you how much energy can be generated from one gummy bear compared to 3 M&M's when they are mixed with molten Potassium Chlorate. Makes you wonder why we're eating this stuff.

Halloween Sugar Cookie Recipe

A basic rolled sugar cookie recipe is all you need.

The most basic of recipes is to use a rolled sugar cookie dough and cut it out with Halloween cookie cutters into the shapes that you want. Once baked and cooled, you can frost to cookies using a white icing mixed with food coloring to get the desired effect that you want. Here is a recipe that I often use:

1 1/2 cups powdered (icing) sugar
1 cup butter, softened
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp almond extract (optional)
1 large egg
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cream of tartar
Granulated sugar for topping (optional if you're using icing)

1. Mix the powdered sugar, butter, vanilla, almond extract and egg in a large bowl until creamy. Stir in the remaining ingredients except granulated sugar. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.

2. Heat oven to 375 F and grease cookie sheets lightly.

3. Divide dough in half and roll each half to 1/4" thick on a lightly floured surface. Cut into desired Halloween shapes. Sprinkle with granulated sugar (optional) and place on cookie sheets.

4. Bake 7 to 8 minutes or until edges are a light brown. Remove from oven and move cookies to a wire cooling rack. When cool, frost as desired.
