The Wedding Garter

The customs of throwing a wedding garter began back in the 14th century in France. The customs today are mild compared to what it used to be. The bride use to wear two garters that were worn on the right leg just above the knee. One garter was to be thrown and the other was considered a keepsake.

As the bride sat in a chair the groom would remove the garter with his teeth that was to be thrown away; whereas today the groom removes the garter with his hand. He would than throw the garter to a single male guest and he in turn would place the garter on the woman that caught the bridal bouquet. The keepsake garter remains on the bride's leg and later is removed that honeymoon night in private of course.

Tradition says that the guest who catches the garter and the bouquet will be the next to be wed. And some traditions say that the two people who caught the items would marry each other. Let's explore some other traditions that originated back to the 14th century.

You know the saying; "Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue" began back in the Victorian Era. Something Old-represents the bond to the bride's family and her old life. Something New-represents the couple's new life and future hope for happiness. Something Borrowed-is from a married woman is meant to impart similar happiness to the bride and Something blue-represents fidelity and constancy.

I love the tradition of tossing the garter for the men and not just flowers for the women. That idea was a real winner.
