Yes, I admit, I really get into baking, so I make a horrible mess. Our famliy rule is: if mom bakes a treat those who eat reward me by cleaning up my mess. I'm going to show you a step by step recipe for Witch Finger Cookies made in the Wilton cookie pan.

Best recipe I have found for molded pans
Don't reinvent the wheel
I chose these wicked cookies because I published several severed finger projects on my Halloween Decoration Ideas Webiste; this week seems to be severed body parts week for me(as long as they are not my parts!)The no fuss way to bake these scrumptious scaries is by using the molded cookie pan, but I have found that you have to change your regular cookie cutter recipe up a little bit. Now, I admit, I have made a lot of duds expriementing with these pans, but that is because I always have to reinvent the wheel. I am using my mother in law's suggestion which was adapted from, an old but tried and true, cookie cutter recipe.
By the time you are done, you will have Green Almond/Vanilla Witch Fingers and Brown Cocoa creepy fingers. A two in one time saving recipe. The directions look a little long, but don't be discouraged, as it is very simple. You are just splitting your ingredients up so you can have 2 versions of Halloween Fingers; an edible Halloween Decoration!
Basic Cookie Dough for Wilton Cookie Shape Pans
This recipe will make two flavors and colors
- Serves: 2 1/2 to 3 dozen
- Prep Time: 8-10 minutes to bake cookies
- Total Time: Depends on how creative you want to be
You will need at least 4 bowls with at least one of them the size of a large mixing bowl. Ideas for decorating them are down at the end of the recipe. I suggest reading through it at least once, before you fire up your mixer.
Note on the almonds: I have added slivered almond attached with frosting for fingernails on baked cookies and I have also added whole almonds at baking time (press the almonds into the dought at the finger nail area just before baking).
Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven.
Ingredients
- 1 cup softened butter
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 egg
- 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1-2 t green food coloring (depends on how green you want them- I used gel type and it took less)
- 2 3/4 cups all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt (1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon if salted butter)
- 2 Tablespoons cocoa powder
- Almonds (optional)
Instructions
- Lightly apply cooking spray or vegetable oil (I use my butter
wrapper) - Beat butter and sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy.
- Blend in egg, vanilla and almond extracts.
- Divide the mixture into two bowls in equal amounts
- Add green food coloring to one of of bowls, mix
- In a third bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt, toss
lightly with a fork. - Separate the dry ingredients evenly as you did the wet ingredients
- Mix in 2 Tablespoons of cocoa to one of the flour separations
- Add thebowl of the dry ingredients with no cocoa to one green wet mixture a
cup at a time, mix till absorbed after each dump. - Mix the cocoa dry ingredients and non colored wet remaining ingredients together in the same way.
- You should have two batches of dough, one cocoa and one green.
- Start with the green dough
- Press the green dough into wells (cavities) of molded cookie pan
about 2/3 full - Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until light brown around the edges
- The reason to make the green dough batch first is so you can
gauge how long they need to be in the oven as the cocoa batch will look
brown sooner. - Remove from oven and let cool about 10-15 minutes
- Place a flat cookie sheet or plastic cutting mat over the top of the cookie
pan and flip over, place down on counter top. Lightly tap to remove cookie. I'm giving
you this tip because the first time I used these kind of pans, I
flipped them over without doing the above, and well, lets just say, the dogs got a Halloween
treat! - Let the witch fingers cool completely on a wire rack or wax
paper. I flip them over after a few minutes if using wax paper,
so they are evenly cooled.

Decorating Wicked Witch Severed Fingers
This is the fun part
- icing gels,
- frosting
- royal icing
- melted colored candies
- melted almond bark
- melted chocolate chips
- sprinkles
- sugars and colored flakes
- candy corn
- fondant
- just about anything you can think of
My favorite cookie paint is royal icing made with powered egg
whites. You can separate the icing into several small dishes and
add food coloring. My kids love painting, dipping or dripping
this icing on to make some scary halloween witch finger Halloween
cookies.
These are very versatile cookies, as you can change the flavoring, add or omit coloring and change up the decorations so they are always unique.
Childrens Party Idea
At one of our children's Halloween parties, I made up a batch of plain witch finger cookies and left the Halloween cookie decorating to the party guests. The kids had a blast making their own scary severed finger cookies and it kept them busy for a while. The kids were a little sugared up as they sneaked candy decorations into their mouths, so keep an eye out!
Now you know the secret to no fuss wicked witch finger cookies; your ghoulish guests will be greatful.

Which is better?
Wilton Cavity cookie pans vs. Cookie cutters
Cooking for 30 years and 5 kids, I love shortcuts. I say that while we may loose the traditions we grew up with as kids, progress in the form of ease is totally acceptable. Now my "purist" friends say nothing can replace cookie cutters when it comes to traditional cookies.
Do you prefer the ease of progress or the stubbornness of tradition?

Traditional cookie cutters cannot be replaced ever
New Wilton Cavity cookie pans are totally the way to go so I can spend time decorating cookies instead

The older I get, the more I like shortcuts. I haven't tried Wilton shaped cookie pans, but you've convinced me that I need to.

Halloween Gingerbread Houses?
Did I miss an Easter version?
"Gingerbread houses for Halloween?" my husband said, as he made a scrunched up gargoyle look on his face. Quietly, under his breath he says, "Well, if you say so, its gonna be a lot of work." And I just know he is thinking all those "high maintenance" thoughts. And I started to think he was right until I saw the Halloween houses PREMADE by Wilton. Just like the Holiday Gingerbread houses, the Wilton Halloween Gingerbread Houses are a very cool idea. No baking, just glue the parts together and decorate. Forget the kids, it kept me busy for hours! There are several different Halloween houses, I need to try them all. Instead of my Christmas Village gingerbread town, I can have a haunted Halloween gingerbread town. What a great Halloween decoration and edible too!
