The Origin of Halloween

Read If You Dare!

The Story of Halloween

Halloween is one of the oldest holidays with origins going back thousands of years. The holiday we know as Halloween has had many influences from many cultures over the centuries. From the Roman's Pomona Day, to the Celtic festival of Samhain, to the Christian holidays of All Saints and All Souls Days.

Hundreds of years ago in what is now Great Britain and Northern France, lived the Celts. The Celts worshipped nature and had many gods, with the sun god as their favorite. It was "he" who commanded their work and their rest times, and who made the earth beautiful and the crops grow.

The Celts celebrated their New Year on November 1st. It was celebrated every year with a festival and marked the end of the "season of the sun" and the beginning of "the season of darkness and cold."

On October 31st after the crops were all harvested and stored for the long winter the cooking fires in the homes would be extinguished. The Druids, the Celtic priests, would meet in the hilltop in the dark oak forest (oak trees were considered sacred). The Druids would light new fires and offer sacrifices of crops and animals. As they danced around the the fires, the season of the sun passed and the season of darkness would begin.

When the morning arrived the Druids would give an ember from their fires to each family who would then take them home to start new cooking fires. These fires would keep the homes warm and free from evil spirits.

The November 1st festival was called Samhain (pronounced "sow-en"). The festival would last for 3 days. Many people would parade in costumes made from the skins and heads of their animals. This festival would become the first Halloween.

During the first century the Romans invaded Britain. They brought with them many of their festivals and customs. One of these was the festival know as Pomona Day, named for their goddess of fruits and gardens. It was also celebrated around the 1st of November. After hundreds of years of Roman rule the customs of the Celtic's Samhain festival and the Roman Pomona Day mixed becoming 1 major fall holiday.

The next influence came with the spread of the new Christian religion throughout Europe and Britain. In the year 835 AD the Roman Catholic Church would make November 1st a church holiday to honor all the saints. This day was called All Saint's Day, or Hallowmas, or All Hallows. Years later the Church would make November 2nd a holy day. It was called All Souls Day and was to honor the dead. It was celebrated with big bonfires, parades, and people dressing up as saints, angels and devils.

But the spread of Christianity did not make people forget their early customs. On the eve of All Hallows, Oct. 31, people continued to celebrate the festivals of Samhain and Pomona Day. Over the years the customs from all these holidays mixed. October 31st became known as All Hallow Even, eventually All Hallow's Eve, Hallowe'en, and then - Halloween.

The Halloween we celebrate today includes all of these influences, Pomona Day's apples, nuts, and harvest, the Festival of Samhain's black cats, magic, evil spirits and death, and the ghosts, skeletons and skulls from All Saint's Day and All Soul's Day.

The Story of Turpin

Told by my grandmother to my brother and I when we were very young.

Once upon a time, there was a little old man and a little old woman and they had a dog named Turpin. Well, one night, Turpin kept barking and barking and wouldn't stop. The old man said, "Turpin if you don't quit barking I am going to cut off your tail." But Turpin kept on barking and wouldn't stop. Well, the man kept his promise and chopped off Turpin's tail. The next night the same thing happened and Turpin kept barking and barking. The old man said, "Turpin if you don't quit barking I am going to cut off your legs." Turpin kept right on barking and so the man had no choice but to cut off poor Turpin's legs. Well, the next night Turpin started barking and wouldn't stop again. The man had thought Turpin had learned his lesson but apparently not. So the little old man told scolded Turpin one more time and said, "Turpin if you don't quit barking I am going to cut off your head." But Turpin just kept on barking and so the old man cut off his head and buried Turpin in the back yard. Well, there was no more Turpin at the moment and time and so the old couple went back to bed and slept all through the night. The next day was kind of lonely without Turpin around and then nightfall came. Well, the little old man and the little old woman went to bed. There was no barking because there was no Turpin. In the middle of the night though the man woke up, he couldn't sleep for thinking about what he had done to poor little Turpin he was feeling really bad. He happened to look over and see that the little old woman was gone. She had vanished, she had been taken by the hobgoblins. Then little old man thought, Oh no! that is what Turpin was doing, he was warning us about the hobgoblins. How could I be so stupid, he thought to himself. Well, he quickly went and dug Turpin up out of the back yard and sewed his head, legs and tail back on. You could see all the stitching he didn't sew very well but he did his best. Then he and Turpin went running through the woods as fast as they could to the hobgoblins house. When they got there the old man put Turpin in a brown burlap sac and left it on the front porch and then he went and hid behind a tree. When the hobgoblins came to the door they saw the sack and brought it in. Right when they went to look in the sack Turpin jumped out and gobbled all the hobgoblins up. Then the little old man came running in and untied the little old woman and they went back home and lived happily ever after.

I tell ya' this story scared the bejeezus out of the two of us youngsters and we hardly got any sleep that night.

Here Is A Fun Adult Halloween Game!

Great for a party!!

pic by www.fotolia.com

This game is called "Killer" and can be easily played with little/no cost involved. This particular game has two parts going on at the same time so that if one is solved then you have the other game as the back up!

The first one starts with you deciding who you are going to pick to be the "killer". You need to pick someone who is kind of sneaky and very subtle. The reason for this is you want the killer to remain undiscovered until the end. Okay here goes, you pick the "killer" and then the object is for the killer to "wink" at everyone in the room(separately) and at opportune times so that he/she doesn't get found out.

At the beginning of the party, you announce how the game is played. If you get "winked" at then you have to announce to everyone in the room that you are dead. But you can't do it at the moment you get "winked at"(killed) because if it is just you and the killer standing there then everyone will look at you and know instantly who the killer is. You should wait until the killer walks off or other people are around you(discretion is the key). Those are the rules.

At the end of the night, and if you have picked a good "killer" there should be no one left in the room "unkilled" and at that time the killer is revealed. Everyone already knows who the "killer" is because they were "winked at " by them, but they are not allowed to say anything or tell anyone who has not been "winked at"(killed). We played this game at a halloween party my roommate and I had thrown and my friend ended up with only two people left in the room. One of the guys figured out that she was the "killer. The one who figures out who the "killer" is and is correct gets a prize. Once the "killer" has been discovered and told to the whole room. That is why you have to get someone who can "wink" at someone without anybody else noticing because you don't want the game to end before it starts now, do you?

The other part that goes along with this game going on at the same time is the guess "Who am I?" game. This game starts with the host/hostess coming up with all sorts of names and putting them on different pieces of paper and placed in a basket. These can be names of the dead, living, cartoon or real, When a guest arrives you tell them to turn around and you pin a piece of paper with a name on it with a safety pin to their back so that they don't know who they are getting and they can't see their backs. Now, going to the rest room and turning around or looking in mirrors is strictly prohibited. Cheating is no fun even for the cheater-they lose every time.

So everyone walks around and starts talking to other people(great ice breaker-even for the shy)lol. The person trying to discover who they have on their back is only allowed to ask questions with a yes/no answer. No hints can be divulged. i.e.Am I a dead person? then answered by the person they are talking to with a "yes"(if that is the answer) so now the person starts thinking about dead people and trying to discover who they might be.

They cannot ask the same person more than three yes/no questions before they move to someone else. Once they figure out who they are, then the person who they were standing with takes the safety-pinned name off of their back and places it back in the basket.

At the end of the night you can see who is left with their names still on their backs. Hopefully, no one but there is always a few. Don't make fun of them just because they can't think of their person-it could happen to you ya know. It is meant to be a fun game not a put downy game.

Well, I hope you have a happy halloween and realize that you don't have to spend a fortune to make a great party!!

Let me know what you think and if you have any questions just put it in the comment section!
