Sharing stories while the embers of the fire burn down on a cool fall night is something we look forward to with both a shiver of fear and a frisson of delight. Storytelling has always been one of the most popular ways to pass on folk history. There are lots of ways you can make your storytelling really scary.

Storytelling at Halloween is a tradition that goes back to the festival of Samhein. At least one ghostly tale has to be recounted to an engrossed audience. Some people like films, but when the imagination fills in the details, the story takes on a life of its own. Here are some ideas to get everyone in the right mood with your story when it comes to Halloween.

1. Choose a suitable spot. If you can have a bonfire, let the storytelling begin around the fire. Cooler weather might mean you need to provide some blankets but that all adds to the atmosphere. If you start inside the house, pick out a quiet space big enough for everyone to sit in a tight circle. Instead of a fire, use a lantern or candle.

2. Switch off the lights. You can't tell a good ghost story in bright light. Outdoors, wait until the sun has completely set before starting your story.

3. Make sure you know the story. It can be read or recited from memory but make sure you get it right. A bungled ghost story is like spoiling a good joke by giving away the punch line. A good storyteller practices his craft so that his listeners won't be disappointed.

4. Have an accomplice, or use some props. If someone emphasizes your dramatic moments with some imaginative effects, your story will be much more effective. The performance doesn't need to be flashy or over the top. A few noises, groans or whispers that could be part if the story are perfect to make the story more real. 5. Wear an appropriate Halloween Costume No one will be frightened by someone in Slacks and a T Shirt. A black cloak, some appropriate makeup, and a few well concealed props add to your ghoulishness. Some narrators use a flashlight under the chin as the only light. This is a classic trick, but too much light allows your audience to catch a glimpse of your tricks as they unfold.

6. Try to choose a story that mixes fact and fiction. If you want your listeners to believe you, adding a scrap of truth will get the listeners thinking about the truth of the story. Also, try to choose a story that could come true, that will put your story over the top.
