Demons, Vampires, Werewolves, Witches... Our Favorite Halloween Monsters

On Halloween Eve, you will probably organize or participate in a Halloween party and meet hordes of ghosts, zombies, witches, vampires and goblins.

These scary creatures are the most popular Halloween party guests.

But... what do we really know about these creatures?

What are these beings?

Do they really exist?

Are they illusions?

Halloween monsters are amoung us!

Let's start our nightmarish journey :)

Witches

What is a witch?

First of all the term 'witch' is a bastardization of the words wicca, wiccian, or wicce, all meaning 'wise woman, or in the plural, wise women'.

From the start of time there have been women, and men, who have been versed in the ways of healing, the properties of plants, the courses of the stars, moon, and the planets as well as other aspects of the natural world.

Witches are associated with the earth-based religion known as Wicca, but there are many who could also be called witches who are not followers of this religion. These people are solitary practitioners of a hodge-podge of old pagan ways that existed long before the advent of Christianity and the Catholic church who coined the term 'witch' and started the idea that all those who lived by the cycles of the natural world worshiped the church's devil.

Until the Catholic church came on the scene there was no concept of a Satan or a devil.

Tools of the Craft

There are a few basic tools of The Craft, also called witchcraft. These tools may be as elaborate or as simple as the witch chooses.

The first piece of equipment is the Athame; which is a ceremonial knife used for ritual purposes and not for cutting anything. It's used for casting the circle and evoking the elements and sometimes for mixing any of the ritual's substances.

The next piece of equipment is the Chalice. It can be any shape, size, and made of glass, wood, or a non-toxic metal and is used for mixing wine potions or the salt and water.

There is also the Altar. Your altar is where all of your magical implements are placed. This is where most of all your undertakings of spell casting and ritual work take place.

Other implements are, incense, salt, water, candles, herbs, pins, quill, ink, spell book, a scrying mirror, scented oils, etc.

Do Vampires Really Exist?

Halloween is the time of year when the undead decide to return and visit us. There is no bigger undead celebrity than the vampire. Vampires have gleaming white fangs and their preferred drink is red and thick: blood. Vampires are the most popular Halloween attraction.

But do vampires really exist or have been imagined by our superstitious ancestors?

The most popular type of vampire in today's world is the revenant who has to drink blood in order to survive and has been used countless times in books and films.

One of the most renowned of these is the ever favorite Dracula written by Bram Stoker in the 1800s. The film and television industries have certainly made use of the vampire by glamorizing this creature and giving it a definite sexual allure. It is this image that is so seductive for many people drawn to this dark idea of immortality.

And what about you... do you think that vampires are for real?

Ghosts and Spirits

Halloween is also a time for ghost stories :)

Many cultures believe that we have spirits guides assigned to watch over and guide us.

Depending on the particular culture or belief system this spirit guide can take the form of one's ancestors or a particular animal, such as a raven, rabbit, wolf, etc.

Whatever the belief a person may have there is one thing that seems to be a fact-we do not die when the body dies. We continue on...and where we go after our body dies seems to be a decision that it solely up to the individual.

Perhaps, when all is said and done, we make our own heaven or hell--and what we dream of in this life time is what we have in the next.

Demons... reality or legend?

On October 31st, you maybe will be one of the many people who invite hordes of ghosts, zombies, witches, vampires and goblins. These scary beings are the most favourite Halloween party guests and are extremely appreciated by those who are celebrating the Halloween.

Through out the annals of history mankind has told of dark and frightening ghosts they called demons.

But what are these beings? Do they really exist; or are they only superstitious notions of a by-gone era? Many reports told by individuals who met these beings give little doubt of their existence and reports of attacks by unseen creatures continue even into the 21st century.

For instance, few years ago, a film entitled "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" based on true events, described such a story. The young woman was plagued and tortured by unseen entities who would not allow her to eat weakening her physical body to death. She spoke languages unknown to her, and she would speak in voices not her own. She was put on anti-psychotic drugs which only made the problem worse. Even the family parish priest tried several unsuccessful attempts of exorcism and unfortunately the young woman died..

While the scientist community considers such matters as hallucinations of a psychotic brain brought on by schizophrenic disorder or experimentation with drugs such as LSD, reports of demons and demonic possession still continue.

What do you think? Demons... True or false?

What Are Poltergeists?

Poltergeist is a combination of two German words, 'poltern' meaning a rumbling or to make noise and 'Geist' , which means spirit, ghost, or embodiment.

Poltergeists are thought to be ghosts or spirits that make noises, such as knocking or banging sounds, and they can sometimes move objects.

Many people believe that poltergeist activity is caused by more normal and natural phenomena, like uncommon air currents, heavy air vibrations, or light tremors caused by underground streams.

Are Goblins Devils?

A goblin is considered to be a nasty, evil, crabby, and mischievous creature in the folklore of many cultures. Often these creatures of the Realm of the Fae, or Faerie, are described as a rather grotesquely disfigured little gnome-like creature that may be as short as a dwarf or as tall as a human being.

There are various names for these strange little creatures, Kolbolds, Hobgobs, Gobelins, Boggarts, etc.

Despite that goblins are often portrayed as a villain in many tales about the world of Faerie; goblins are not truly evil creatures, but they are pranksters.

Slothful and/or greedy people often feel themselves being pinched by unseen hands and find their house turned upside down and nearly everything they own thrown about the home.

Most of the tales of the goblins come from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales,... The basic lore and legends of the British Isles are that the English Hobgoblin adores living in human dwellings where he'll make quite a bit of trouble for the people who live there-often driving them out.

Familiar: The Witche's Best Friend

A familiar is a spirit of some kind often thought to be embodied in an animal and is used by witches or wizards to attend, serve, and guard said witch or wizard.

A familiar, was, and still is supposed to be a subordinate demon in the form of an animal. Such creatures, drew nourishment by suckling from the devil's mark, a witch's breasts, or other less sensitive parts on a witch.

The black cat is one of the most commonly recognized types of familiars, although they could be any color. A black dog was also said to be a favorite for witches.

At one time toads were one of the most popular of all familiars to be had by a witch or wizard. Of course, the Church said the toad was the preferred animal shape of Satan and his demons.

They were used to help prepare magic potions and it was made sure that the toad was present in nearly all of the spells and rituals, including the Sabbats.

The Most Frightening Halloween Symbols: Werewolves!

Werewolves in history

The term conjures up images of humans transforming into fearsome, blood-thirsty creatures who prowl the night seeking to feed on whoever or whatever crosses their path-preferably any wayward human winding their way towards the local pub or out for an evening stroll; perhaps walking the family dog.

Where did these legends of humans who could turn into a wolf-like shape come from?

Legends of shape-shifters have been around for as long as humanity has walked the earth.

Tales of humans who could turn into wolf-like creatures that had a savage blood lust and preference for human flesh-who roamed the nights under cover of darkness seeking some poor unwary victim, have existed since time immemorial.
