I adore scary things like ghosts and ghouls and vampires and skulls and zombies and all those interesting sort of friendly demons that just want to have fun. The Origins of Halloween
For some, it was the end of summer or Harvest Festival.
Here is one explanation from Wikipedia:

Halloween is my favorite holiday and I really and truly believe that it should last longer than one day. We need months to properly honor all the undead creatures, all the weird candy offerings, all the strange brews in vats and cauldrons that fall under the title "Halloween." But there's also a lot of other days and you need special gifts for the family, or you need to make a special statement to the world or your significant audience of one.
