Halloween Stories: Novels Your Inner Ghoul will Devour

My name is Gregory Fisher (a.k.a. the Undead Rat). I manage a blog about Horror Books, dedicated to bring you the best in scary reading. I'm pleased to present a wonderful collection of Halloween Stories for you.

Although horror novels are general appropriate reading for the Halloween season, there is a certain type of horror novel that seems especially suited for the season. Even though it's not considered a subgenre of horror, I do collect and classify them as Halloween Stories!

Widely diverse in nature, these stories are united by a common thread -- they take place during or are otherwise influenced by the Halloween season and the month of October.

Take a look at this list, check out the books and see if they don't put you in the mood to go lurking on Halloween night . . . waiting for just the right . . . trick . . . to treat yourself with.

Halloween Stories by Ray Bradbury

Gently terrifying Tales by the Master of Dark Fantasy

Ray Bradbury is a maste of science fiction, fantasy and horor. His brand of horror tends towards dark fantasy and is more incline to make yuou think than to make you shudder but, for me, he is Halloween Stories Personified.

He has several books set in the month of October -- on or near Halloween. Perhaps his most fameous is Something Wicked This Way Comes, but all of them make for good reading.

Halloween Stories of Earthling

Earthling Publication's Halloween Series

Earthling Publications is one of the small presses that the horror genre is known for.

Each year, Earthling's publisher Paul Miller prints a special Halloween book to commemorate his favorite holiday. The books in this series features "...classic terrors such as monsters and haunted houses rather than psychological suspense or real-life horrors"

The series started with a severely limited edition run of Mr. Dark's Carnival -- only 15 copies were printed. Because of the rarity, this edition is #0 and the following editions, starting with Blood Red by James Moore are given numbers.

Many of the books in this series are already sold out but luckily, they've been republished -- only the editions available from Amazon will be listed below. However, I'll feature the original book covers from Earthling Publication's Halloween series below the book list.

The Series Order:

  • #0 Mr. Dark's Carnival (Halloween 2004)
  • #1 Blood Red (Halloween 2005)
  • #2 The Unblemished (Halloween 2006)
  • #3 The Haunted Forest Tour (Halloween 2007)
  • #4 Moontown (Halloween 2008)
  • #5 October Dark (Halloween 2010)
  • #6 By Wizard Oak (Halloween 2011)
  • #7 Blood Harvest (Halloween 2011)

Al Sarrantonio has been working and re-working on this Orangefield Cycle for many years now.

These Halloween Stories aren't part of a series but failing to include them in this lens would be a grievous sin.
