Trick or Treat
Halloween has always been a fun time at our house. When the kids were small, my husband would take them trick or treating while I stayed home and handed out candy. In our old neighborhood it would not be unusual to have 100 trick or treaters come to our door. It's the one time of the year that it is OK to go around and ask for candy and to bring home a big sack of it! My husband says that when he was a kid he used to go out and fill up one sack and then come home for another one. It's all about the candy!

THE MAGIC VINE
A fairy seed I planted,
So dry and white and old.
There sprang a vine enchanted
With magic flowers of gold.
I watched it, I tended it,
And truly, by and by
It bore a Jack o'lantern
And a great Thanksgiving pie

Trick or Treat Fun
When our kids were too old to trick or treat they invented other ways to have fun on Halloween. Some years they would hide a walkie talkie near the front door and then station themselves inside near a window with another walkie talkie. As kids approached the door they would say (in a very scary voice) things like, "Who is it that DARES to approach my dooooor?"
Another year they went to a friend's house where they stuffed a flannel shirt and jeans to make a dummy. They tied a rope around him and every time someone came to the door they would throw him out of the second story window. Screaming and giggling would ensue, of course.
My middle son, who loves pirates and is very good at accents, dressed up as a pirate and answered the door and handed out treats, all the while talking to the kids in pirate lingo. Everyone enjoyed that.
One year my friend had a Halloween party for our kids. We all came in costume, played games, and had snacks, including punch with a big gummy rat in the punch bowl.

Fairy Legends
Fairies were associated with Halloween in Scotland
The fairies, of course, figure prominently in the superstitions respecting Halloween. Indeed, the children of Scotland seem to consider that dreadful eve as more peculiarly the festival of the fairies, than anything else - the following being the most popular rhyme used by them on the occasion:
HEIOH HOW FOR HALLOWEEN!
WHEN THE FAIRIES A' ARE SEEN
SOME BLACK AND SOME GREEN
HEIOH HOW FOR HALLOWEEN!
There were two species of fairies,- one black and the other green. The black had sold themselves to the devil, and were, therefore imimical to the interests of mankind; but those in green, apparently the most numerous class, were favorable to mortals, and, for that reason were called the "good people." It was believed, that children born on All Saints Eve were in after life patronized by the good people, and
endowed with the peculiar faculty of " eccing sichtt.
(I think this translates into something like "second sight.")

Brownies
Brownies and Halloween
BROWNIES
It is said that brownies are little fairies. Sometimes they come into our houses, but most of the time they live out-of-doors in flowers and trees. They are very tiny and wear brown or gray trousers, green jackets, and little red caps trimmed with feathers.
There are several kinds of brownies. Those that live in trees are called dryads. The nymphs live in the sea. Then there are the sprites who live in popcorn kernels, and the elves who live among dry leaves. Besides these there are the goblins and the witches, who bring trouble and make mischief.
Brownies are great workers. They wash dishes, sweep floors, carry in wood, and perform all sorts of little tasks and kindnesses. Brownies are very fond of animals and when they make their home in the barn, the cows and the horses are sure to be well cared for.
Brownies come on Halloween, but sometimes it seems as though the goblins and the witches have everything their own way. Surely the other brownies, who are the most kind-hearted little people, would never be guilty of some of the things that are done on Halloween. How happy everyone would be on Halloween if none but the good brownies would come - the brownies who pile up the neighbor's wood or do other kind deeds!

Old Halloween Customs
All Saint's Day
In Cheshire, England the local custom was for the young people to go Souling on All Saint's Day. They would visit the various houses in town and sing, hoping to receive food or money. At the end of the evening they would split the spoils among the group. You can see how our modern tradition of trick or treating derived from that old custom. A favorite song, repeated by the Soulers, was as follows:
A Soulin'
This an updated and more readable version of the old song. You may have heard it sung by Peter, Paul and Mary. It was also sung at Christmas time.
A SOULIN'
(Stookey/Batteaste/Mezzetti)- Neworld Media Music Publishers -ASCAP
Hey ho, nobody home, meat nor drink nor money have I none
Yet shall we be merry, Hey ho, nobody home.
Hey ho, nobody home, Meat nor drink nor money have I none
Yet shall we be merry, Hey ho, nobody home.
Hey Ho, nobody home.
Soul, Soul, Soul cake, please good missus a soul cake.
Apple, pear, plum, cherry,
Any good thing to make us all merry,
One for Peter, two for Paul, three for Him who made us all.
God bless the master of this house, and the mistress also
And all the little children that round your table grow.
The cattle in your stable and the dog by your front door
And all that dwell within your gates
We wish you ten times more.
Soul, Soul, Soul cake, please good missus a soul cake.
Apple, pear, plum, cherry,
Any good thing to make us all merry,
One for Peter, two for Paul, three for Him who made us all.
Go down into the cellar and see what you can find
If the barrels are not empty we hope you will be kind
We hope you will be kind with your apple and strawber'
For we'll come no more a 'soulin' till this time next year.
Soul, Soul, Soul cake, please good missus a soul cake.
Apple, pear, plum, cherry,
Any good thing to make us all merry,
One for Peter, two for Paul, three for Him who made us all.
The streets are very dirty, my shoes are very thin.
I have a little pocket to put a penny in.
If you haven't got a penny, a ha' penny will do.
If you haven't got a ha' penny then God bless you.
Soul, Soul, Soul cake, please good missus a soul cake.
Apple, pear, plum, cherry,
Any good thing to make us all merry,
One for Peter, two for Paul, three for Him who made us all.
Now to the Lord sing praises all you within this place,
And with true love and brotherhood each other now embrace.
This holy tide of Christmas of beauty and of grace,
Oh tidings of comfort and joy.

Old Halloween Customs and Rituals
All Saint's Day
The eve of All Saint's Day is memorable in Scotland as a time when the fairies hold a grand celebration, and when witches and evil beings are abroad on errands of mischief. This superstition, modified in various ways, finds its way into the cultures of other nations. In the United States, Halloween used to be observed by country maidens as a time for trying sweethearts, and gaining an insight into the future that would enable them to find out whether they would be married or not; and if so, who would be the man of their choice.
The various love tests applied included burning nuts, the love-candle, eating an apple before the looking-glass at midnight, the salt egg, and dropping melted lead through a key into a basin of water. All of these had to be accompanied by certain ceremonies or incantations, in order to have the power to lift the veil of the future.

On Halloween
Loring Holmes Dodd 1915
Halloween always suggests pumpkin lanterns, red apples, witches, ghosts and all other things that are present on this superstitious evening. Why is it that Halloween has survived? Is it simply a custom, or does it have some firm foundation? I think it is because the people are still a little superstitious. After the crops are gathered in the fall the people like to get together for a good time and Halloween seems to be just what is needed.

Jack-O-Lantern's Story
A Halloween Jingle
JACK-O-LANTERN'S STORY
Ho, ho, little folks,
Do not be afraid.
I'm jolly Jack-o'-lantern,
Out of a pumpkin made.
When I was just a pumpkin fat,
Out in the field I lay,
Until a little laddie came
And carried me away
He cut a slit out for each eye,
Another for a nose,
Then carved a great big, grinning mouth
With teeth in funny rows.
He put a candle in my head,
And let the light stream through,
And said, "O Jack-o-lantern,
Won't I have fun with you !

The Fairy Fount
Sarah Louisa P. Smith
A fairy fount in the forest lay,
Where mortal footstep ne'er dared stray.
For with charm and sign and mystic spell
Was fraught each leaf of the lonely dell.
Sweet voices there were heard to sing,
But the eye met never a living thing,
Save on Halloween a shadowy form,
Like floating mist of the vanished storm.

All Hallows
Halloween
Halloween, the name popularly given to the eve or vigil of All Hallows, or festival of All Saints, which being the 1st of November, Halloween is the evening of the 31st of October. In England and Scotland it was long consecrated to harmless fireside revelries, with many ceremonies for divining a future sweetheart.
