BOOOO! Did I scare you???

Halloween is one of my most favorite holidays!! I am originally from Upstate NY where we actually have four seasons...this will be my first fall in Arizona so I am not completely sure what it entails.

I know that in Upstate NY the leaves start to turn, the weather is getting colder and there is just this atmosphere that makes you feel different and know that summer is now over. I love the smell and the sound of the leaves on the ground when I walk thru them. I also love that I start thinking about what we are going to do for Halloween!!!

We never much decorate our house much for the holiday like we do for Christmas. We usually aren't even home to hand out candy!!

There is always excitment all day long on Halloween! The kids get all dressed up in their costumes to head off to school. School normally has a parade so everyone can see each other's costumes.

Later that afternoon around 5 we head down to the Grandparent's house to "Trick or Treat" Of course they have extra goodies for the grandkids, then we head up to town to do our major trick or treating!

Below is a picture of my husband and my daughter Halloween 2007. My husband had been in Iraq for 15 months and had missed every Halloween of our daughter's life, so last year he was home just in time and he told her he would dress up as ANYTHING she wanted! That isn't something you should tell to a 4 year old!

She told him with great happiness that she wanted him to be a candy corn!! She was obsessed with candy corn at the time so that was what she thought he should be!! He agreed to it but we had no idea where we were going to get a candy corn costume!

So it was Gramma to the rescue! My mother bought the colored felt and made the costume. I bought him some orange tights and some white face paint. She had to practically sew him into the costume and then we put a hose in the bottom to make it stick out to give him the shape of a candy corn!

It was GENIUS! Everyone loved it!! We had people pointing and laughing as we went around house to house! It was so much fun!!!

So far this year she says he has to be a black cat! That aught to be real cute!!! But she says she hasn't made up her mind completely!!

What is Halloween ~ Wikipedia

Halloween costumes are outfits worn on or around October 31, the day of Halloween. Halloween is a modern-day holiday originating in the Celtic pagan holiday of Samhain (in Christian times, the eve of All Saints Day). Costumes and masks were also worn at the festivals in an attempt to copy the evil spirits or placate them.Campbell, John Gregorson (1900, 1902, 2005) The Gaelic Otherworld. Edited by Ronald Black. Birlinn Ltd. ISBN 1-84158-207-7 pp.559-62

Costuming became popular for Halloween parties in the US in the early 1900s, as often for adults as for children. The first mass-produced Halloween costumes appeared in stores in the 1930s when trick-or-treating was becoming popular in the United States.

What sets Halloween costumes apart from costumes for other celebrations or days of dressing up is that they are often designed to imitate supernatural and scary beings. Costumes are traditionally those of monsters such as vampires, ghosts, skeletons, witches, and devils, or in more recent years such science fiction-inspired characters as aliens and superheroes. There are also costumes of pop culture figures like presidents, athletes, celebrities, or film, television, and cartoon characters. Another popular trend is for women (and in some cases, men) to use Halloween as an excuse to wear sexy or revealing costumes, showing off more skin than would be socially acceptable otherwise.

Halloween costume parties generally fall on, or around, 31 October, often falling on the Friday or Saturday prior to Halloween.

Trick or Treat ~ Where did THAT come from?

Trick-or-treating is a custom for children on Halloween. Children proceed in costume from house to house, asking for treats such as candy, or sometimes money, with the question, "Trick or treat?" The "trick" is an idle threat to perform mischief on the homeowners or their property, such as eggs and flour being thrown at householders' windows if no treat is given.

In the United States and Canada, trick-or-treating is now one of the main traditions of Halloween and it has become socially expected that if one lives in a neighborhood with children one should purchase treats in preparation for trick-or-treaters. The National Confectioners Association reported in 2005 that 80 percent of adults in the United States planned to give out confectionery to trick-or-treaters,Trick-or-treaters can expect Mom or Dad's favorites in their bags this year, National Confectioners Association, 2005. and that 93 percent of children planned to go trick-or-treating.Fun Facts: Halloween, National Confectioners Association, 2004. The tradition of going from door to door receiving food already existed in Britain and Ireland, in the form of souling, where children and poor people would sing and say prayers for the dead in return for cakes. Guising ? children disguised in costumes going from door to door for food and coins ? also predates Trick or treat, and was traditional at Halloween in late 19th century Scotland and Ireland. While going from door to door has remained popular among Scots and Irish, the North American custom of saying "trick or treat" has become common. The activity is done in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, Puerto Rico, and northwestern and central Mexico (where it is called calaverita, spanish for "little skull"; instead of "trick or treat", children ask ¿me da mi calaverita?, "can you give me my little skull?"). In the last twenty years, amid controversy, the custom has spread to other countries, such as Italy, Australia and New Zealand, possibly due to the ubiquity of U.S. American TV shows and movies in those countries.

Halloween Books for Kids

Halloween Safety for Kids

While Halloween can be so much fun, many times we forget that it can also be dangerous if you don't pay attention. Here are some tips to help your kids have a safe holiday!

~* You want the kids to be safe while they are out and about in their costume. The costume should be fireproof and make sure that if there is something covering their face that the eye holes are big enough so they can see where they are going. Also make sure that the costume isn't too long so they don't trip over it either.

~* Many people carve out pumpkins to put out on Halloween night. It is very dangerous for the pumpkins to have candles in them and for them to be in an area where kids will be walking. They now have flameless battery operated candles that you can put in the pumpkins that are much safer!

~* If your child is carrying a prop for their costume, make sure that it doesn't have sharp edges and that it is smooth and flexible enough not to cause injury if fallen on.

~* Put reflective things on your child's costume such as reflective tape, glow sticks or have them carry a flashlight.

~* Always send a responsible adult with the children trick or treating. Even though it is your neighborhood and you might consider it safe, it is dark out, there are tons of people around and you can't really tell who is who.

~* Make sure your children know the rules of no eating any candy until they are home and it has been inspected by an adult. Many people make homemade treats for Halloween but unless you know the person that made them, you should probably throw anything that isn't sealed in a package out.

~* Teach your kids basic everyday safety such as not getting into cars or talking to

Easy Halloween Crafts for Kids

String of Ghosts or Pumpkins

Make a string of jack-o'-lanterns or ghosts to hang around a room. These simple-to-make strings make a great Halloween decoration. You can drape the strings across rooms, over windows and from the chandeliers.

Supplies needed:

Construction paper (orange and black for pumpkins, white and black for ghosts)
Crayons or markers
Scissors
Glue, tape, or staples
A long piece of green or black yarn or string

Draw a jack-o'-lantern's face on a piece of orange paper, or a ghost on white paper. Make sure to draw a long stem on the top (your pumpkin or ghost will hang from this stem, which will be folded over).

Cut out the pumpkin or ghost. Make eyes, a nose, and a mouth from black paper (or use a black crayon or marker).
Fold the pumpkin's stem in half. Fold the ghost's "stem" completely behind the ghost.

Attach the pumpkin or ghost to a long string. Use green yarn for the pumpkins, black string for the ghosts. Attach them using tape, glue, or staples.

Maggoty Pumpkin Soup
by Stella Zedman

This spicy pumpkin soup, a puree of hearty potatoes, sweet pumpkin puree, savory chicken broth and orzo, is guaranteed to spice up your next Halloween party.

Ingredients
2 tbsp. (30 mL) butter
1 onion, chopped
4 cups (1 liter) peeled, cubed, raw pumpkin
2 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed
4 cups (1 liter) chicken broth (homemade or canned)
1/2 cup (125 mL) uncooked orzo pasta
1/2 tsp. (2 mL) salt

Cooking Instructions

Melt the butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté for about 5 minutes, until soft. Add the pumpkin and the potato and stir to combine. Pour in the chicken broth, cover, and let the soup simmer until the pumpkin and potato are very soft - about 30 minutes.

Transfer the soup to a blender and puree until smooth (you will have to do this in 2 or 3 batches). Return the soup to the saucepan.
Meanwhile, cook the orzo - in other words, maggots - in a saucepan of boiling water until tender but not mushy. Drain, rinse under cold water, and stir into the pumpkin soup. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt, if necessary (some chicken broth is salty enough that additional salt won't be necessary).

Zombie Brain with Tombstone Toasts
by Stella Zedman

Sure to be a favorite haunt at your next Halloween party, this creepy cheese spread, made with savory Cheddar, Parmesan and cream cheese, serves as a wicked centrepiece for your buffet table.

Ingredients
1/4 cup (50 mL) blanched almonds
2 cups (500 mL) shredded white Cheddar cheese
1 cup (250 mL) spreadable cream cheese
2 teaspoons (10 mL) Worcestershire sauce
1/4 cup (50 mL) grated Parmesan cheese
1 French baguette

Cooking Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C). Spread the almonds out in a baking pan and toast in the preheated oven for 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and dump into the container of a food processor (or blender, if you don't have a processor). Chop roughly, but don't pulverize the nuts to a powder. They should remain crunchy.
Add the shredded cheese, cream cheese and Worcestershire sauce to the container with the nuts and process, scraping down the sides of the bowl once or twice, until very well mixed. The cheese mixture should be nearly smooth.

Spread half of the Parmesan cheese onto a plate. Spoon half of the cheese mixture out onto the plate with the Parmesan and roll, by hand, to form a slightly flattened ball. Set aside and repeat with the remaining Parmesan and cheese mixture.
Press the two flattened balls together to form the two halves of a zombie's brain (we all know what that looks like) and place on a serving plate. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the brain to firm up, then make brain-like indentations in the surface of the cheese with a knife, spoon, or whatever else you have handy. Voila - a brain.

Now the tombstone toasts. Slice the baguette into 1/4-inch (0.5 cm) slices. Spread out on a baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees F (180 degrees C), turning them over once, for 10 minutes or until they are lightly toasted on both sides.

Arrange tombstone toasts around the brain on the serving plate and serve, if you dare.

Servings: 12 to 20

Halloween ~ Evil or Fun

Personally I think Halloween is alot of fun. I love to dress up and love to dress up my daughter and as you can see in the big huge picture I have on here, even my husband gets into the spirit by donning his big huge candy corn costume!!

Others, well they think that Halloween has to do with the devil and all things evil. I do understand that is how it originally started and I guess to some that is how they celebrate it but in my personal opinion I think it is just all about fun!
