Frans Hals

Frans Hals (1580-1666) was a famous Dutch portrait painter.

He painted many individual portraits (including The Laughing Cavalier and Gypsy Girl) and many group portraits.

Hals used bold and loose brush strokes in his paintings which helped give them a feeling of liveliness and gaiety.

I am not a huge fan of historical fiction, but this was a whole lot of fun! Frans Hals was a 17th century Dutch painter, a contemporary of Rembrandt and Vermeer. His alleged diaries are discovered buried in a farm in upstate NY. Peter, a perpetual and therefore somewhat flaky graduate student, fluent in Dutch, is hired to translate them. The book alternates from Hals' crazy life to Peter's crazy life.

I loved Hals, and throughout the book Peter falls for him too and takes a very personal and emotional interest on the authenticity of the diaries. The book can almost be categorized as a "thriller" because there is definitively a sense of mystery and urgency in it.

Frans Hals (article)

Frans Hals (1580-1666) was a Dutch Golden Age painter especially famous for portraiture. He is notable for his loose painterly brushwork, and helped introduce this lively style of painting into Dutch art. Hals was also instrumental in the evolution of 17th century group portraiture.

The Style of Frans Hals

"Some of his work is considered the most moving portraits ever painted. ... Hals developed a style that combined the robustness and breadth of Ruben's paintings with dramatic movement from the Utrecht school and Caravaggio. The paintings radiated spontaneity and showed dashing brush strokes... No drawings by him are known so it is presumed that he worked straight on to the canvas. He evolved a technique that was close to impressionism."
