The Hammered Dulcimer - a Unique Instrument that Provides Awesome Tones for Cultural Music!
I'm not sure when I first saw a hammer dulcimer (or even if it was being played when I saw it). But the first time I remember seeing one being played was when I saw a Public Broadcasting Station playing some satellite transmissions relayed from the Soviet Union -- the old U.S.S.R. --and one of the broadcasts was a show that featured folk music from Russia, the Ukraine, and Byelorus. They called the instruments Tsimbali. The music was lively and haunting -- and inspirational enough that I decided to learn some of the songs on my guitar.
I later encountered various hammered dulcimers being played and then learned that one of my coworkers was an experienced hammered dulcimer player. And that she'd play her dulcimer with her group at a local Irish Pub.
This Squidoo lens will give you a lot of information on this amazing and beautiful sounding instrument.

The Hammered Dulcimer -- A Cultural Music Instrument for Many Years
The strings stretched across the hollow sounding board are usually in pairs--to aid in volume and harmonics. The strings are usually played by being hit with small wooden mallets, called "hammers", that are usually made of wood, bone, light metal, or even plastic.
