The Hammered Dulcimer -- A Cultural Music Instrument for Many Years
Also called a Tsimbali in many areas of the world (Russia and Northern Europe), the trapezoidal hammered dulcimer is related to a wide variety of instruments spanning from ancient Persia, through the Middle East, in Europe, and Asia.The strings stretched across the hollow sounding board are usually in pairs--to aid in volume and harmonics. The strings are usually played by being hit with small wooden mallets, called "hammers", that are usually made of wood, bone, light metal, or even plastic.
