However not all of us are lucky enough to have the perfect existing setup to put up a hammock. Maybe you don't have any well spaced trees in the yard, or you are renting and therefore not allowed to put holes and bolts into walls!
In that case don't fear you are still able to enjoy a great deal of relaxation from a freestanding hammock stand. This allows you to have a stand anywhere you have the space but with the need for existing fixing points.

Wooden or Metal Hammock Stand
Everyone should enjoy a bit of relaxation every now and then if not daily. A hammock and hammock stand is one of the best ways to achieve this relaxation.
Like hammocks, hammock stands or frames, come in a great variety of styles and sizes.
The two most common types are wooden hammock stands and metal hammock stands, but both do the same job of supporting you and your hammock anywhere you put it.
Wooden hammock stands are generally very visually appealing and make a great feature in any outdoor setting. They can easily enhance any area whether it is your back garden or a hotel resort or B&B house.
When comparing different types of wooden hammock stand look at the different types of wood used, the thickness and weight as a gauge of the quality. Different woods will have different inherent qualities such as hardness and flexibility. Check the weight the stand supports and what if any care is needed. Often wooden hammocks stands will need to be looked after somewhat more than the metal variety. Generally the wooden stands will be sealed such as with a varnish or oil. Over time this does fade and wear off. Therefore it is important to re-apply such a coating every so often - say around every 6-12 months to keep the stand all sealed and the moisture out. A quick sand before applying the product will also help with the application and keep the stand nice and smooth.
One of the most popular type of wooden stands around at the moment is an arc type shape. These are not only very beautiful but very functional with a great shape that fits most types of hammocks very well. Many are very large at around 4metres long so will fit larger hammocks, yet do take up a fair chunk of yard space.
Before purchasing be sure to check that if you have an existing hammock that it will fit the frame.
Metal hammock stands are generally a cheaper option to the wooden stands and are also not so heavy and bulky. This can make them great for increased portability, such as moving around the house or taking away on holiday with you.
Some are very lowly priced however and it pays to be wary of such ones. Unless you wish to be unstable and swaying side to side as they lack any solid stability. If purchasing from a store make sure you test it out, and move about in it whilst doing so to see how it reacts. If purchasing online try and view as many photos as possible so you can get a good impression and study the design to work out how stable it will be. More often than not steal stands will be powder coated to prevent rusting. Ensure they are well coated and all the steel is covered. If chips in the paint do occur and often they do then a little touch up bottle of paint will work wonders to touch up these areas.
Both types of stands will usually come unassembled and will require you to put them together. This is usually straight forward and easy to do, and makes it easy to store and transport if required.
