The Hand of Fatima / The Hand of Miriam

Another Arabic name for the hamsa (or khamsa) is the hand of Fatima, commemorating Fatima Zahra, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad.Hamsa hands often contain an eye symbol. Depictions of the hand, the eye, or the number five in Arabic (and Berber) tradition is related to warding off the evil eye, as exemplified in the saying khamsa fi ainek ("five [fingers] in your eye"). Another formula uttered against the evil eye in Arabic is khamsa wa-khamis. Due to its significance in both Arabic and Berber culture, it is one of the national symbols of Algeria, and appears in its emblem.

The khamsa is the most popular of the different amulets to ward off the evil eye in Egypt. The Hand (Khamsa) has long represented blessings, power and strength and is thus seen as potent in deflecting the evil eye. It's one of the most common components of jewelery in the region.

The hamsa's path into Jewish culture, and its popularity particularly among the Sephardic Jewish community, can be traced through its use in Phoenecia. Jews sometimes call it the hand of Miriam, referencing the sister of the biblical Moses and Aaron. Five (hamesh in Hebrew) represents the five books of the Torah for Jews. It also symbolizes the fifth letter of the Hebrew alphabet, "Heh", which represents one of God's holy names. Many Jews believe that the five fingers of the hamsa hand remind its wearer to use their five senses to praise God.

From wikipedia

The Hamsa, a universal Middle Eastern symbol

I'm not sure how many people are aware of this, but aside from being beautiful, the hamsa is also a symbol shared by both Muslims and Jews. It's testimony to their common Middle Eastern heritage. What do you think about that?

Artist Yair Emanuel, jewish artArtist Yair Emanuel, a graduate of the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, lives and works in Jerusalem. Born on Kibbutz Sha'alvim, he grew up in Jerusalem in an Orthodox home, and later in life adopted a more pluralistic approach to Judaism. This background influenced Emanuel's style of Judaic art, which is based upon a fusion of traditional motifs and ancient Jewish manuscripts with modern and oriental art. Vivid and harmonious colors as well as a mixture of the Old and the New characterize Emanuel's work, which is designed and crafted in his Jerusalem studio.

The principal techniques he employs encompass painting on silk, hand embroidery, raw-silk appliqué and painting on wood. Among the staff in his studio are new immigrants and mentally disabled employees. A portion of the studio's profits is donated to charity.

I voted in your poll -- I wish it would be a symbol of peace (I did vote for that). I think of the Hamsa (and always have) as G-d's outstretched hand (z'roa netuya). The Mezuza and many other things are there to remind us of G-d and to always think of G-d when trying to decide what to do in a specific situation. It's sort of to keep us on the straight and narrow.

The Hamsa also reminds me of my Sephardic heritage (my family is mostly Ashkenazic, but I and a few cousins like to embrace our Sephardic roots). Nice lens -- thanks.

Great examples of hamsas on this lens. I love the second one from Yair Emanuel. When my daughter went to Israel a few years ago, she picked up a silver hamsa necklace that is done in the Yemenite style. Very beautiful. :)
