Hamsters as Pets

Hamsters are becoming more and more popular and they require good care to live out their life to the fullest. These cute, fuzzy pets require lots of care, but are great pets for children.

Hamsters

Here is a checklist of things you need.

A good sturdy cage or aquarium
Wood chips
Soft bedding ( for nesting )
A hut/ nesting box
Hamster Ball or wheel
Hamster mix or blocks
Chew blocks
OPTIONAL
Tubes
Toys
Treats

The cages bars shouldn't be to far apart. Don't buy it if you could easily stick your fingers through the bars with extra space. If you can but don't have extra space you should be fine. Cages are easier to clean than Aquariums because of the weight of the glass. Cages tend to smell more if you dont clean it enough.

TOYS

You can use any type of toy as long as its not to small for your hamster( tubes ).Chew blocks are good to keep the teeth from getting sharp.

BEDDING/LITTER

Use something like Carefresh instead of wood chips because they sometimes irritate the hamsters feet. If you want you can use wood chips but check the feet for swelling

FOOD

You could use a brand like Kaytee or any other brand . They come in blocks or mix. My daughters hamster seems to like the mix better probably because of variety. Any food will work.

Things You may need to know

PICKING A HAMSTER
When your at the store try to pick an awake hamster. If they are missing fur or seem sick don't buy it. If all the hamsters are sleeping and don't seem to be well go to another store because they are probably going to die.

TYPES OF HAMSTERS
There are many types of hamsters to buy. We like the silk hamsters or teddy bear hamsters best because they seem to live longer. Russian Dwarf hamsters are good, too.

    My daughter has allergies. They affect her a little bit. It depends on her allergies and how bad they are. My daughter only sneezes.

    Cute lense. I don't know much about hamsters but my daughter has allergies. Would they affect her?
