The Road to Hana and Beyond

Journey Along the Road to Hana and the Piilani Highway

The Road to Hana is a MUST DO on Maui. Look to the left; the Pacific Ocean crashes against the coast. Look to the right; post-card perfect beauty surrounds you. If you like to follow the rules, turn around in Kipahulu, drive back the same way you came, and purchase the obligatory "I Survived the Road to Hana" T-shirt. Everyone else, continue on the Pillani Highway and lose yourself in splendid isolation.

Travel Tips

Hana Highway State Highway 360Start early and plan to spend the entire day. You'll want to drive slowly and stop multiple times. Pay attention to mile markers and familiarize yourself with some of the best places to stop.

Don't forget your camera. If you have extra batteries, bring them. If you get motion sickness, take Dramamine; there are more than 600 hairpin turns along the way. Bring snacks, or better yet, stock up on fresh mangoes and local treats, such as fried coconut chips, from vendors along the way. Be courteous and let local pass you. Other essentials: water, sunscreen, insect repellent, rain jacket, swim suit, hiking shoes, and spending money.

Most importantly, have fun.

Off The Beaten Path

Many of the waterfalls along the road to Hana require at least a short trek through the rainforest. Consult a detailed travel guide and pick the sites that interest you most. If you're a hiking enthusiast, you may be interested in some of the more strenuous hikes along the way.

Garden of Eden: Maui Botanical Garden and Arboretum

At mile marker 10.5, between Kailua & Kaenae, plan to spend at least an hour at the Garden of Eden.

Haleakala National Park: `Ohe`o Gulch

Haleakala National Park Maui

Twelve miles past the town of Hana, take a self-guided tour of the Kipahulu area of the Haleakala National Park. The waterfalls and pools at 'Ohe'o Gulch, commonly referred to as the 'Seven Sacred Pools', are some of the most beautiful sites on the island. Swim at your own risk; flash floods are common.

Piilani Highway: The Road Not Taken

It will void your rental car agreement, but it's worth it. Piilani Highway circles from Kipahulu back to West Maui. It offers the most spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. Be prepared for one lane roads, blind hairpin turns, roaming livestock, and sections of the mountain side that are held together by chains. Nonetheless, where else on the island can you see the profile of a human face formed on the side of a cliff (look closely, do you see it in the picture above)?

Your Journey Begins Where the Paving Ends

Hana Highway Dirt Road Starts Here

The most photogenic part of Piilani Highway begins where the paving ends. Unless you're in a hurry, go slowly over the bumpy road and take it all in. My camera battery drained shortly after St. Joseph's Catholic Church near Kaupo. When you embark on your journey, be sure to capture the black rock beaches and lava arches at Nuu Bay. Aloha.
