Making a Real Christmas Wreath and Wreath Buying Ideas

Start with a Hand-Made Wreath, then change to Artificial if you like

In past years I have been invited by a neighbor to an annual wreath-making event at the New Jersey Botanical Gardens close to us. The pine branches, pine cones, holly, and many other clippings from trimming the plants and trees at the gardens themselves are used to make the wreaths, with a few added flourishes purchased at craft shops.

It is a fun thing to do, whether you do this with a group or on your own.

I like to have a winter wreath hanging on the front of our log cabin from Christmas on through the winter season until it's time to put up my spring wreath, so start with my home-made wreath, and when it begins to fade, I put up my artificial wreath.

The wreath pictured is one that I made at our local New Jersey Botanical Gardens (NJBG) a couple of years ago, sorry it's cropped a little close so you can't see the long ribbon, but it was a lot of fun to make and lasted quite a long time. I'd like to show you how you can make a home made christmas wreath, too, or find a nice one online to purchase.

Countdown to Christmas 2012

Christmas 2012: December 25, 2012

1. Making a Wreath - The Base

This is a wire wreath frame that you can use for making your wreath....you can insert the pine leaves and decorations easily, whether real or artificial, to this base, covering it completely, affixing with craft wire. You can click through the link and search for different sizes and styles...just search "wreath frame".

At the wreath making event that we went to, we used a wire base that already has some artificial plastic evergreen "leaves" (you'll see one in the video later), then I build on it by wiring the real evergreens, holly leaves, holly berries, pine cones, and other decorations onto it. At the end of the season, I clean the dead leaves, etc. off the base, save it, and re-use next Christmas.

Cordless LED Christmas Wreaths

Artificial wreath, economical lighting

If you prefer buying an artificial wreath, LED lighting has become very popular as it uses very little electricity...make the wreath battery operated, and you have a wreath that doesn't need to be near an electric outlet, and doesn't use batteries up as quickly as one with conventional lights.

2. How to Decorate Your Hand-Made Wreath

What to decorate it with

While evergreen is the most popular type of green to add to your wreath, you can use any type of green that lasts late into the season. Use more than one kind of evergreen if you can, and make that the primary foundation for your wreath, then add other greens if you can find them..holly, greens with small leaves from some shrubs can be added. When you are trimming, trim with care...consider the tree or bush, and how it will look when you are finished.

Look for berries that are left behind after leaves have fallen...or year round that you can dry.

Pine cones can be gathered year-round for your wreath and saved until you are ready to use them. We have evergreens that provide small pine cones each year, and when hiking through the forests local to us, there is an endless supply.

Walk through your local craft store and pick up a few things you can't find in the forest, fields, or your own backyard...and be thankful for all the money you saved by "recycling" what nature has already provided you.

The ideas for what to add to your wreath are only limited by your imagination!

3. Adding Lights to Your Hand-Made Wreath

LED lights are energy-efficient

You can add LED lights to your wreath if you like. When you purchase them, consider the length...what is shown here is more appropriate for decorating a house, but you can find smaller lengths if you click through and search.

More Pre-Made Artificial Wreaths

In case you don't have time to do it yourself

Some just don't have the time to make their own wreaths, or physical challenges like arthritis may make it difficult. This doesn't mean you can enjoy having a beautiful artificial wreath that you can use year after year...here are some suggestions. If this is not the holiday season, some may not be available.

4. How to Make an Christmas Wreath Video

Seeing it done is the best way to learn

These are simple instructions for making an artificial wreath with supplies from a craft store...the base that she used for her artificial wreath is the same thing that I use for the "real" wreath that I make, and the approach is very similar.

5. Hanging Your Wreath

Time to show off your beautiful wreath!

While a large nail in the side of a log cabin like I live in may be adequate and fit the "rustic" decor, some of you may need something a little nicer, like a wreath-hanger.

This is just one of many varieties, click through and search "wreath hanger" for a complete selection, no obligation to buy when you click any links.

Lightly Used Christmas Wreaths Might Save Money

And they aren't that hard to find

eBay is my favorite source for used items, and sometimes, especially during challenging economic times, this is a great way to decorate on a budget. There's hardly a thing that can't be found on eBay. Make sure you ask any questions you have before buying, especially if the seller is new or doesn't have a large "positive feedback" number.

At Christmas, I've always used artificial, either bought or made by me. This is a lovely lens, so helpful for the wreathmaker. Good job!

Thank you so much, I am off to pay a visit to you and your lenses:-)

Due to just plain old laziness, I always use an artificial wreath. I rather like the one I have now, and my daughter made it, so I guess it qualifies as handmade artificial.

This year mine is an old artificial one I've had for years, with pine cones and artificial apples on it, I put the large bow from the wreath I made last year on it, looks nice:-)

The wreath you made is just lovely. I enjoy making wreaths and have used them for decorating purposes for years.

I have a homemade one that I hang up every year. Nice lens.
  • momto4 Nov 18, 2009 @ 11:42 am | delete
I love hanging a Christmas wreath on the front door each year! I never thought to make one myself. I usually just buy one that's already made, but maybe I'll try it this year!
  • KarateKatGraphics Nov 18, 2009 @ 10:17 am | delete
I love the fragrance of a real wreath. 5*
  • jgelien Nov 17, 2009 @ 7:55 pm | delete
I usually buy my wreath from the Boy Scouts but I would also like to try making one. It looks like fun. Great lens.

Great ideas for making a wreath for the Christmas door or anywhere! Spreading my Angel wings for a pine scented blessing.
  • happynutritionist Nov 16, 2009 @ 10:44 pm | delete
Thanks for the visit and the blessings, Bev! I smell the pine:-)
  • stargazer00 Nov 16, 2009 @ 5:23 pm | delete
I used to be a floral designer and we would not make the wreaths but decorate them. I love a big tartan bow and pine cones on mine!
  • happynutritionist Nov 16, 2009 @ 10:43 pm | delete
"stargazer", I love a big tartan (red plaid) bow too, last year my wreath had one...and learned that it is best to use an uneven number of pine cones...I started with 2 (like the one pictured from a previous year) and a floral arranger told me to add another to make it less symmetrical, interesting. Thank you for stopping by!
  • sandyspider Nov 16, 2009 @ 3:18 pm | delete
    Nicely done!

    Thank you, Sandy!

Sorry to say that we don't use a wreath. It is the one detail that I never quite make it to. I have a good friend who does a beautiful one every year though. Nicely done lens, blessed.
  • happynutritionist Nov 16, 2009 @ 1:42 pm | delete
Brenda, thanks for the blessing...it took me quite a few years before I put my first artificial wreath on our home, and it was only a few years ago that I started making them. Thanks for visiting, and have a wonderful Thanksgiving and Christmas!
