Handel's Messiah Recordings

Music for the Soul
It seems the whole world knows the nearly infamous Alleluia Chorus. But this is a huge work with many beautiful choruses and arias. There is a section for Easter as well, focusing on the resurrection of Christ. All of the text is Bible prophecies about the promised savior of the world.
It can be difficult to choose one recording of Handel's Messiah. There are so many versions, traditional and others with contemporary twists. In recent years there has been a focus on using period style instruments and there are many baroque orchestras and other groups focusing on performing early music in authentic style. There are highlight versions and complete recordings. A highlight version may satisfy in some cases, but purists insist on complete recordings.

What Handel's Messiah Means to Me
I have always enjoyed this music and have participated in several sing-along Messiah performances. This is when the audience sings as the choir for the choruses. This music is a meaningful part of the holiday season for me. When I lived in Korea and had my first Christmas away from family, nothing felt right until I attended the sing-along Messiah concert at the international church that I attended.

Debate
Is Handel's Messiah overplayed and overdone?

No, I could never get tired of it.
wordstock says:
Besides the message that the song has for the Christian faith, the music is spectacular and can never be overdone.
Nenkai says:
It is impossible to hear this majestic work too often! Every time I hear it, I hear something new.
sheilamarie says:
No, the music and the lyrics keep our focus on what Christmas and Easter are all about.
jgelien says:
Not at all. I look forward to Christmas when all the live performances occur. I am actually taking part in the first Messiah sing-a-long of the season this weekend.
TheWhistler says:
NO. What a wonderful piece of music.
Yes, if I hear the Alleluia Chorus one more time, I'll snap.
