Handicap Playgrounds

There are laws and regulations that call for a playground accessibility. These are the UN Standard Rules, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. In some countries there is also a national action plan. There are studies done that show a lack of accessibility on the municipal playgrounds. According to the municipalities themselves are calculated only a small percentage of the playgrounds are available. There are different types of disabilities and their impact on the design of the playgrounds.

There are many dimensions that are good to have a knowledge of when you design playgrounds, for example, how high a child in a wheelchair can reach, how strong the lights need to be and what information need to be available. The presence of vegetation on the playground is good but can create problems for children with pollen or contact allergy. It is therefore important to know which plants that produce more or less allergies. Vegetation can also create other problems for the availability, trees with aggressive root system can lift the surface and create unevenness to become a trips for the visually impaired and an obstacle to the wheelchair. What kind of surface you choose is important to be able to move around on the playground and come up with the various playground equipment.

Once you come to the rides, it is then important to be able to use it. There are some good prefabricated products on the market but the option to design your own playground equipment or rides exist.
