Chenille Fabric How-to

A simple method for making your own chenille fabric.

Simple Steps To Make Chenille

  1. Choose a base fabric that looks good on both sides. Cut to size.
  2. Choose 4 or 5 fabrics in compatible colors. Cut to size.
  3. Layer the fabric pieces right side up on top of base fabric. Smooth layers & pin together.
  4. Baste layer stack around edges; remove pins.
  5. Sew parallel lines about 1/2 inch apart.
  6. Cut all layers except the base fabric between the stitching lines.
  7. Wash & dry fabric to "fluff" the rows.
  8. You now have a piece of unique, handmade chenille to add to a special sewing project.
  9. Care: wash on delicate with delicate detergent and air dry flat.

Play With It!

  • Try recycling old silk shirts by re-making them into chenille.
  • Layer fabrics from lightest to darkest, or vice versa.
  • Pick a patterned fabric and a fabric of similar weight that matches one of the colors. Alternate fabric layers.
  • Make stripes! Try layering two colors - three layers of your first color and two of your second.

    It never occurred to me to make my own chenille, but now that I've read your simple instructions, I am going to give it a try. I can think of quite a few things that hand made chenille would look great as part of.

    This is a great example of a very focused lens - and proof that a lens doesn't need to be lengthy to be interesting and useful.
