Puppets are people, too.

OK, maybe not. But that character that is created in the look and motion of the puppet certainly makes it 'come to life'.

And putting that 'life' into the hands of the children themselves is what this lens is all about.

Hand puppets are arguably the most articulate, intuitive, and easy to create of all the various puppet types. Therefore, hand puppets, sock puppets, and finger puppets will be the focus on this page.

Enjoy.

A Puppet in the Hand is worth Two in the Bush

Ever since we were very small, we have explored the world around us by developing our senses. Sight, Sound, Smell. They all become an important part of our experiencing the world around us.

Within the body are the various sensory organs that take data and sends impulses to the brain about what we have seen or heard, etc. But do you know what the largest sensory organ in the human body is?

If you guessed 'the skin', you are right. The tactile sense, we often refer to as 'feel', is the most overlooked of the input signals sent to our brains.

Could it be that this same mental familiarity with 'touch' is the same reason that we find the hand puppet the easiest way express ourselves through puppetry?

Or maybe it is that other styles of puppetry have a certain learning curve associated with it (to learn how to use the strings, for example).

But whatever the case, we can easily grab a sock or a bag, or even the nearest stuffed animal, and help it to come to life and share a special moment with the nearest kid.

(No matter how old they may be.)

Wikipedia: Hand Puppets

Hand Puppets

A hand puppet (also called a glove puppet) Logan, D, Puppetry, p.15 is a type of puppet that is controlled by the hand or hands that occupies the interior of the puppet. Sinclair, A, The Puppetry Handbook, p.15 Glove puppets are a variation of hand puppets. Rod puppets require one of the puppeteer's hands inside the puppet glove holding a rod which controls the head, and the puppet's body then hangs over most or all of the forearm of the puppeteer, and possibly extends further. Other parts of the puppet may be controlled by different means, e.g., by rods operated by the puppeteer's free hand, or strings or levers pulled from inside the head or body. A smaller variety, simple hand puppets often have no significant manipulable parts at all. Finger puppets are not hand puppets as they are used only on a finger. Logan, D, Puppetry, p.14
