What is Hands off our Vitamins?

Hands off our Vitamins is a campaign against the introduction of The European Commission Food Supplements Directive. If the Directive comes into force then the EU will dictate what vitamins and minerals we can buy in all the member states, including the UK. It will also dictate the dose levels that will be permitted and if your favourite vitamin or supplement is among those that will not be allowed then you will not be able to buy it!

Campaigners against the Directive say it will result in the closure of many health food shops, all over Europe and we will see smaller specialist supplement manufacturers going bust.

Natural living expert and BBC Radio 2 presenter Janey Lee Grace, the UK's "Green Queen" is supporting the Hands off our Vitamins Campaign on her website Imperfectly Natural.

Hands off our Vitamins was founded by actress Jenny Seagrove

British stage and film actress Jenny Seagrove has funded the Hands off our Vitamins website which aims to build on the public awareness generated by the Save Our Supplements (SOS) campaign. The campaign was launched by Consumers for Health Choice(CHC), in August, 2001.

Sue Croft, Director of CHC, said:
This is a great addition to the campaign. Jenny liked the slogan 'hands off our vitamins' which we used earlier this year as part of the SOS campaign. The new site is deliberately intended to appeal to a younger audience and give consumers the basic information in short, attention-grabbing messages. But there are also click-throughs to the CHC site where people can access more serious and in-depth information.

Why should you care?

Should the USA be worried about something happening in Europe?

This Directive should be of concern to the USA as well as European countries. Yes, of course we'll continue to obtain valuable nutrients through our diet - but is this enough for many people, including 'at risk' groups? In addition, there is now scientific evidence showing that our food no longer contains the nutrients it once did - mainly because world soils have been adversely affected due to intensive farming and the need to feed growing populations.

The US needs to get involved in protecting their markets in the face of the EU legislation proposals. Americans are great supplements users and it would make sense for them to protect their substantial market and ensure that there's no barriers to global trading. So helping the UK to stop the Directive should be a priority.

Next to vitamins and minerals, the greatest threat is to herbal remedies. Legislation is already in place and we have until 2011 to make Regulators understand that although we all want the herbals to be safe, the huge costs being imposed by Government to register products means that hundreds of products will be lost - and consumer choice will be severely restricted. Fish oils, botanicals (herbal products currently sold under food law in the UK), essential fats, evening primrose oil, amino acids and many more will all fall under the EU hatchet. Some of them quite soon.

This is a very important subject that effects all of us. We should have the freedom of choice.

Wouldn't it be nice if the world didn't revolve around money. I think one of the main reasons they are considering changing laws about this has more to do with controlling who gets the money than whose health it helps or hurts. I take vitamins and herbs. Love Colloidal Silver, and NO, I don't want them to change the laws so that I can't get what I want to take.

I would have to have more information on why they don't want us to take certain things, or large amounts of certain vitamins. Because I know some vitamins can be toxic when taken over time because your body can't get rid of certain amounts...they build up over time and eventually can harm you. If the government was just trying to keep uneducated people from hurting themselves than yes. If they were just trying to take away our freedom of choice I would say "nay"! Great lens AJ, I have to say too how much I appreciate your blessings, you are truly an angel, even before you got your Squidoo wings. You have done so much for this community, and we love you!

To be quite honest I've never really thought about what I feel about Vitamins etc until now. I do know that I couldn't do without my Vitamin B12! I also take calcium on a regular basis because of my age and my poor-ish diet. So, I suppose I would like my freedom to choose :) 5*

You know AJ, I worked for a fortune 500 chemicals company who manufactured terpene chemicals, derived from crude sulfate turpentine i.e. the pine tree and made up of alpha-pinene and beta-pinene as the building blocks. Well, long story short, it was interesting to hear about some of these being components for Vitamins! I knew there were flavor and fragrance chemicals, but never thought vitamins!
