Handshake Induction for Hypnosis

The Handshake Interrupt

The Handshake Induction is basically a pattern interrupt, so it is frequently also referred to as the Handshake Interrupt. It's effective because it is taking a rote performance activity -- shaking someone's hand -- that we do every day and interrupting it.

When you interrupt a habitual behaviour like the handshake, it creates a sort of blank spot in the subject's mind -- what's coming next? If you act quickly, you can fill in the blank with your suggestion, but you'll need to act fast because this trance state is fleeting.

Induction Techniques on Youtube

Most of the examples of handshake inductions you see on Youtube are so over the top that they are poor demonstrations of its effectiveness in covert hypnosis. How covert is it do have someone drop to the pavement or just stand there in a trance state with their hand in the air? And what exactly do you do with them once they are there?

The true master of covert hypnosis is someone like Derren Brown who can drop someone into a hypnotic state without them noticing that having occurred, even after they are no longer in a trance state. The induction is used so that the conversational techniques are more effective.

If you take a look at the following video, Derren was already working on this guy before the handshake, but he uses the handshake to reinforce what he's already doing and to deepen the emotional impact, rapport and connection to his suggestions.

The Russian Scam

Derren's video above is basically a reenactment of what's known as the Russian Scam or "Gypsy Hypnosis". This kind of shakedown is fairly common on the streets of Russia so you can see that NLP can in fact be used for criminal ends. Don't do this!

I don't think there's anything wrong with using rapport techniques to improve your communication with people and what you get out of life, but I draw the line at actually ripping people off.

The Russian Scam Explained

The next video explains some of the different techniques that Derren is using to get the guy to hand him his stuff -- most especially the handshake interrupt (aka Handshake induction).
