Handy gifts for a new boat owner

New boat owners need lots of handy gifts and gadgets

John, my very significant other, just bought another boat so I've been made aware (by him....) of handy gifts for a new boat owner. Yes, that's right, he's dropped hints about fish finders (like this birthday present (a hand held fish finder), tackle boxes, compact dish sets, etc. And, it doesn't really matter what the size of the boat is, there's always a bunch of gadgets or gifts that are needed by new boat owners.

I've discovered that finding just the right gifts for a new boat owner are much cheaper on the internet that at the local West Marine or boating store. I'm sure you'll find that too, just by seeing some of the great items and prices of things I've found.

And, for one of the coolest presents for a new boat owner, check out my personal review of my Sony Waterproof camera. This thing is amazing!

Every new boat owner should know what he or she is doing

Educational books about boating are always a good idea

John takes his captain duties very seriously when he's boating - the safety of his passengers is paramount to anything else. He's actually taking a Captain's course in Feb 2011, and, together with the prerequisites of 360 days on the water (a minimum of four hours each day), documented within the last five years he can get his six-pack license. A six-pack license will allow him to carry 6 passengers up to 100 miles off shore. It will take a lot of education and studying for him to pass the rather stringent Captain's test. To read more about becoming a licensed boat captain, check out The National Maritime Center which provides credentials to Mariners.

Realizing that not every boat owner will become a certified Captain, I can't stress enough how important it is for them to be educated about how to handle a boat and ensure the safety of the passengers. I know at least 5 people who have suffered injuries due to the boat operator not taking his duties seriously. The below books are decent reads on the subject..

And, while we're on the topic of boating safety...

Here's some items which every boat should have aboard for emergency situations.

Floating keys!

Let's have a show of hands for anyone who's ever had to go diving for keys - pick me, pick me! These floating key rings may seem like a mundane gift for a boat owner, but trust me on this one, someday, you'll be well thanked.

A Rod and Reel with an underwater camera!

Now, how the heck cool is this? If your new boat owner is going to be fishing in clear waters, I think this rod and reel with an underwater camera would be a really fun investment. Wouldn't work well in the Chesapeake Bay where we are but, one day, when we're relocated to Key West, this is on my wish list.

See live footage right on your fishing pole! Now you can really talk about the big one that got away! This camera is full color, full motion LED with a sun screen for easy viewing.

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." ~Mark Twain

Not only good for finding and catching fish, but, this underwater camera will also give you a clear view of underwater hazards, like tree limbs or tree trunks.

A great starting tackle kit for the new boat owner who aspires to be a fisherman

I'm a fan of kits. Period. If it comes in a kit, I'll buy it. There's just something about having everything you need right there all at once that I love. And, that's why I love this Deluxe Tackle Kit - if there's anything better than a regular kit, it's a deluxe one!

A few fun gifts for the new boat owner which won't break the bank

I've been giving a lot of gifts to my new boat owner (it's ok - he's cute...), but, the below are perfect gifts when I want to walk onboard with just a little something. None of these is going to set you back a fortune but will be greatly appreciated by your new boat owner.

I've been loving our foldable boat seats

John bought two of these beautiful boat seats which we put on the bow - perfect for sipping wine and watching the sunset.

For boats with limited kitchen facilities...

...A new boat owner will love some cooking items

John's new boat has a very nice kitchen area but, a lot of smaller boat may not have the luxury of a stove, microwave, or any other items necessary for a decent dinner if staying aboard overnight. And, if you've never spent the night out on the water on a private boat, you've been missing something! The below items are all great gifts for a boat with no or limited kitchen:

GASONE Portable Gas Stove CSA Approved

GSI Outdoors Glacier Stainless Mess Kit

Keurig 35 B30 Mini Personal Single-Serve Brewing System, Black

Fred & Friends Port A Pint Folding Beer Glass

Fishing knives are always a great gift for a new boat owner

There are so many nice fishing knife kits on the market that it was tough to choose just the right one for John's new boat. Since storage is at such a premium, I like the fishing knife sets that come in their own case but you might be able to spring for a larger set like those below.

Sportsman Dream Knife Set
7 Pc Stainless Steel for Baiting to Filleting to Sawing with This Complete Set of Outdoor Knives

X-Treme 8pc Fishing knife set

Calcutta 7-Piece Heavy Duty Fillet Knife Set

Ships are the nearest things to dreams that hands have ever made.

Storage is always at a premium on every boat

I don't care if the boat you're supplying is a 15 foot with a Cutty cabin or a mini-yacht, for some reason, there's never enough storage space on a boat. It's not, after all, like you can go to the basement to get an extra roll of paper towels. The below storage containers may not be the sexiest gift for a new boat owner, but that doesn't mean they won't be very welcomed.

BoatMates Underseat Bag

BoatMates Pedestal Cooler

Ziploc Big Bag Double Zipper, Large, 5-Count

Add boat storage where there was none before

I love this behind the seat boat organizer. Store items you'd like handy for the captain, like snacks, foul weather gear, safety equipment, or even fishing tackle. This is a very unique storage container for a boat, and I guarantee that your new boat owner will love it. This particular boat seat storage fits almost any captain's chair.

There is NOTHING--absolutely nothing--half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.
- Kenneth Grahame

The boat's bathroom (the "head") could always use some gifts

Unless your new boat owner bought a bost with an actual "head," you might want to consider some portable options for all day trips. John's other boat is a 26" MacGregor Sailboat with a portable head which comes in handy, but we hate to empty it so I bought a bunch of porti potty bags to use in the toilet.

Also, a lot of boats don't have pressurized showers so portable showers will allow you to rinse off the sea water after a day of fun and sun.

Get Rid of Boat Odors

Thetford Porta Potti 135 Marine Portable Toilet

Reliance Products Double Doodie Toilet Waste Bags

Stearns SunShower 5 gallon

Antiseptic hand wipes have many uses to the new boat owner

IMHO, you can't have enough antiseptic hand wipes when being on a boat. Especially after a day of fishing or crabbing, my hands get particularly grubby feeling. These individually wrapped hand wipes are not only refreshing but necessary too.

Germ-X Antibacterial Hand Sanitizing Wipes

PURELL Sanitizing Hand Wipes

Wet Ones Antibacterial Hand Wipes
Fresh Scent

These are all great boat gifts! Love the pack for the back of a boat seat. Makes so much sense to use all the space available.
