Hang Drums

If you are into drums (my terminology only because they are struck similar to a drum), you may know what the hang drum is. It truly is more than a drum when it comes to music. It is a whole new sound. I would have loved one of these for Christmas, but the only steel pan I got was a cooking pan.

I first ran across this musical instrument while looking at videos on how to play a thumb (kalimba) piano. The sound that the hang drum makes is very interesting; very pretty. I have included several videos so that you can hear its various sound. It is very intriguing. After listening to several videos, I became hooked! If I had $10,000 to burn, I would buy one. I understand that is what one of the best would cost.

The flying saucer type instrument has only been around since 2000 and is a marriage of science and art. The sound however has been the creation of several years study by PANArt Hangbau AG which founded the technique in 1993. And I would have thought the sound would have been originated from Africa but the history tells us Switzerland. In any case, this is my discovery of the week and I just had to share. What better way than through Squidoo. Please enjoy.

History

The HANG was created in January 2000 by the tuners of PANArt Hangbau AG, formerly Steelpan Manufacture AG, Bern, Switzerland. It came out of twenty-five years of manufacturing the steelpan and research on its technology and acoustics. The youngest member of the family of acoustic musical instruments, the HANG is the result of a marriage between art and science. Five thousand HANG players worldwide and an ever-increasing demand show the deep resonance this instrument has with individuals. As we are only two hangmakers, our interest here is to invite scientists to continue working together to better understand this phenomenon.

The price of the Hang (this is the correct name, not "hang drum" as you can read in the Wikipedia article) is not $10,000. It is much cheaper. In 2011 CHF 2,000.

HANK DRUM - Propane Tank ?

I understand from looking at sites and reading comments, that there are hang drums being sold that are made from propane tanks. The real ones costs several thousand dollars...they say up to $10,000 for an original one.

The Roswell Incident

The Roswell Incident transports the listener on a journey of sound exploration through Hang drum rhythms. Solo and layered Hang pieces weave through myriad moods ranging from simple and elegant to complex Tabla-like polyrhythms. Other songs employ additional instruments that complement the Hang including Randy Granger's masterful Native American flute playing, Didgeridoo, Percussion, Vocal Harmonies and even a muscular Spoken Word reading on Dance at the Totem. Granger evokes new sounds from the Hang using alternative playing styles like using the bottom side for a deep Udu like bass trance beat and percussive finger work, even samba-like slides. The Roswell Incident is a sonic road trip through an inspired, mesmerizing landscape. Playful songs sit comfortably next to introspective meditations like Spiral in Beauty and Gu Groove. Powerful vocals, Didgeridoo and Flamenco rhythms make for a stunning blend on Mi Corazon and give the song a truly epic, cinematic quality. After your first abduction you'll volunteer for more journeys taking the listener to a deeper place again and again. --John Pascuzzi, editor, oddmusic
